News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room

Math- There will be a math test over chapter 13, Area & Perimeter on Tuesday of this week.  The students have review work  to do this weekend to help them practice.  They also can complete any unfinished pages in their workbook for extra practice.  We will then begin a unit on geometry.  The students will draw and identify points, lines, line segments, and rays.

Spelling - This week in spelling the students will be working with three syllable words.  They will be responsible for completing pages 193-195 in their volume 2 workbook unless they pass the pretest.  If they pass the pretest, they will work on alternate activities for the week.

Language Arts - We will continue reading Love That Dog.  The students will continue to compare how Jacks feelings about poetry change from the beginning of the story to the end. They will read poetry and find the figurative language and elements of poetry  in the poems that they read.
They will then, apply that form of figurative language to their own poetry.

The first poem they will write is a Haiku poem.  The students will include personification in their Haiku poems.

The students will also understand that an adverb is a word that describes a verb and  tells how, when and where.

Social Studies- This week we will travel to the West.  The students will fill in a Map of the states in the west.  They will have a Map activity to complete at home that will be due on Thursday of this week.  There will be a Map quiz on the West on Thursday.  They will need to place the states correctly on the map.

Science- There will be a Science test on  Simple Machines on Wednesday of this week.  The students  They should study the main concepts in their book and all
They should know:
All vocabulary
understand scientists meaning for work.
Understand all simple machines  - what they are made up of and how they work
Recognize and identify simple machines
Which simple machine does not change the direction of the force? (wheel and axle)
Understand threads on a screw and what simple machine they are
