News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 2-6

Important Dates to Remember:

In my homeroom a Scholastic book club order form will go home on Wednesday. Please have them turned in by Monday, Feb. 9th if you would like to place an order. Make checks payable to Scholastic. Thank you.


Spelling - This week the pattern is 1 + 1 + 1 words and ending that begin with consonants.

Reading- This week the students will be assessed on their knowledge of summarizing and cause effect skills. The students will read passages and show their understanding of the information given in the passage through mulitple choice questions. They will also practice writing responses to questions asked about the passage.

English This week the students will have a test over adjectives in unit 4. They will have homework assignments that will help them to review. They should bring their books home each night to review the skills in each lesson. They will also finish their "Hot Spot" writing.

Math - In Math this week the students will review finding the mean, median and mode of a set of numbers. They will learn how to use line plots and stem and leaf Plots to read and organize data. Please practice these skills with your students. They will be tested on their 3 division facts on Friday.

Science This week in science the students will be studying how energy changes form. They will learn about potential energy and kinetic energy. They will understand how people produce electricity from other forms of energy.

Social Studies A test over chapter 8 is planned for Friday of this week.

News From Mrs. Cavoto's Class January 26th-30th

Things to Remember:
Friday, February 6th, Movie Night

Spelling - The pattern the students are focusing on this week is the 1 + 1 + 1 pattern. (one vowel, one consonant, one vowel sound) Words with this pattern have to have their final consonant doubled before adding ing or ed.

English - This week we will continue our work with adjectives. The children are using adjectives and colorful language to write about their "Hot Spot". They will also learn how to use adjectives to compare two things using er, and more than two things using est (comparative and superlative forms. A test is planned for Wednesday, February 4th on adjectives.

Reading - This week the students will continue to work on summarizing skills. They will also study the elements of biographies and understand the cause and effects of story events.

Don't forget to turn in your form to get your free ticket to Great America. Many children have already read that many minutes, but the form needs to be filled in.

Science - This week in science the children will undersand how electricity and magnetism are related. They will compare the effects of a magnet and an electric current on a compass. They will also compare the properties of magnets with those of electromagnets.


Social Studies - This week the students will describe the landscape and climate of the Badlands 67 million years ago. They will understand how the climate in that area changed over time and how that effected the landscape of the area.

Math In math this week, the students will learn how to collect and organize information using a tally chart and table and then interpret their information. They will also learn to interpret and construct Venn Diagrams to sort, describe and clarify information. They should learn their 3 division facts this week.

News From Mrs. Cavoto's Class Jan. 19-23rd

Thursday- My homeroom spelling B to determine winner and runner- up for 4th grade B

Spelling This week unit 17 is a review of units 10-16. The test this week will be different. The students will get a list of words and have to pick the word that is misspelled.

English- This week the students will begin a unit on adjectives. They will review what adjectives are and then learn how to write with adjectives after be and using a, an, and the.
The students will begin a writing activity. They should think of a place that they love to go to when the weather is warmer. ( their favorite "Hot Spot" ) They should brainstorm a list of things that they see going on when they are there and the things they can do while they are there. They should not share this with anyone in their class.

Reading This week in reading will be working on sequencing of events and summarizing. The students will learn to find the main ideas of a passage and use those ideas to summarize a passage or chapter that they have read.

Math - In math this week we will have the test on chapter 6 on Wednesday. They should know how to tell time even using the second hand (see textbook for examples). They also need to read calendars and thermometers and understand elapsed time. Negative numbers were also introduced in this chapter, and the children have to have a good understand of those as shown in the chapter. The children should take their books home and review the skills throughout the chapter. They should also be practicing for a two division timed test planned for Friday of this week.

Science - In science this week the students will learn about electricity and magnetism and how they are related. They will try to use electricity to make a magnet.

Social Studies - Maps are due on Tuesday of this week. They will have a map test on Friday of the midwestern states. The students will learn how the Great Lakes were formed. They will describe how the Great Lakes are connected to the Atlantic Ocean and why the flow of the Chicago River was changed. What are the advantages of shipping by water?

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 12-Jan. 16th

In my homeroom this week, we will have a practice Spelling B on Thursday, January 15. The words will go home on Monday for the kids to study. The Real Spelling B in class will take place on Thursday, January 22. Two winners from that spelling B will be chosen. The winners from that spelling be particpate in the whole 4th grade spelling B. Date to be announced.

Spelling - Lesson 16 this week is on the letter group ough. This letter group can be pronounced in several different ways. A few words are spelled with the letter group ould.

English - We will have a test on Wednesday over unit 3 on verbs. There are lesson reviews at the end of the chapter for each lesson. The students will bring homework home to help them review for this test.

Reading This week the students will focus on summarizing skills. They will also study biographies. This week they will read a biography of Martin Luther King Jr.

Science - We will begin a new unit on electricity. This week the students will discover what electricity is and how it moves. They will learn the difference between static and current electricity.

Social Studies - The students will finish up their scrapbooks on the Southeast Region. We will move into the Midwest Region. The need to learn the states that make up the Midwest Region.
They will have a quiz on Friday over the states in the Midwest Region.


Math This week the students will learn how to convert larger units of time into smaller units of time and smaller units of time into larger units of time. For example: How many days are in two weeks. They will have to think: How many days are in one week and then multiply 7 x 2 to find out how many days there are. They will also learn to read a thermometer and understand the value of negative numbers. A test will be on Friday over chapter 6. I will send home their books each evening so that they can review this chapter at home. I will begin giving division timed tests. The students should study for their 2 division facts to be given on Thursday of next week.
