News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 28-Feb.1

Math - There will be a math test over chapter 7 on Tuesday, January 30.
The students should go over lessons 7.1-7.5.  They should bring their text book home to use the pages as a review of the skills.

Spelling - This week is a review unit.  The students will be responsible for workbook pages 79-81. There will be a test on Friday of this week.

English - The students will make comparisons using more and most, and they will use comparative and superlative forms of good and bad.  There will be a test over adjectives on Friday of this week.

Reading - We will finish reading our literature books.  There will be a vocabulary and comprehension test on Thursday of this week.  The students  will work on writing  responses to literature.

Science - The essential question in science this week is How Does the Body Think and Move? The students will describe the jobs of the nervous system.  They will describe how the muscular and skeletal systems work together to move the body.  The students will work with a team to make a model of their body systems.

Social Studies - This week the students will understand how products are transported in the Midwest.  They will compare the advantages and disadvantages of shipping by land and water.  They will also describe the landscape and climate of the Badlands 67 million years ago.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 14-18

The children brought home their Spelling B words on Tuesday. We will have our classroom Spelling B the week of January 21.  We will have one practice  and then a final spelling B, and the winner and runner-up will represent our class in the grade level Spelling B which will be the week of January 28th.

Math - There is a test scheduled for Wednesday of this week over chapter 6.  The students should review the skills that are in their math packet and the papers that they have brought home.  They should also bring their textbook home to help them study.  They will also have a division 4 fact test  on Friday.   They should be practicing these at home as well.

Spelling - This week in spelling the students will be working with words that have the /j/ and /s/ sounds.  They will have a test on Friday.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 44-46 unless they are in the Pretest Group, and then they will be responsible for the activities for the week.

English - This week in English, we will begin a unit on adjectives.  They will identify adjectives that tell what kind or how many, and they will identify the nouns they describe.  They will also practice elaborating sentences with adjectives.

Reading - The students will continue to read their books this week and apply the reading strategies they have learned since the beginning of the year. The comprehension skill that we will be focusing on next week is drawing conclusions. Good readers use details in a story to draw conclusions about characters and events.  Students may use graphic organizers to gather details from a story to draw conclusions.  Students will learn that it's possible to draw more than one conclusion from the same details.

 The students will also practice writing summaries that are not too long, not too short, but just right in order to explain the main parts of a chapter.  They will use transition words to help them move through their summaries, so that it is not just a listing of events and it helps the reader understand the sequence of the story.

Science - This week our test over chapter 3 lessons 1-3 will be on Tuesday.

learned behaviors-give examples
instincts-give examples
animal adaptations and what they are used for-examples

Social Studies-  The  students will describe how the Southeast changed during the reconstruction and analyze the development of the civil rights movement.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 7- Jan. 11

If you wish to participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program the reading forms are due on February 1st.

The students will be taking their MAP tests this week on Wednesday and Friday.  We will be encouraging them to get a plenty of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.

Math - In math this week, we will review elapsed time using time on the clock and calendar. The students will learn how to change units of time.  When helping them with this at home, please refer to their math packet because that will help you understand how we have been doing it in class.    The students may use their calculators on this skill.  They will also learn how to read a thermometer using degrees below zero.  There is a test scheduled for next Wednesday over chapter 6.  

Spelling -  Our words for the week will include the final sound of long e; beauty, alley, monkey, etc.  The pretest will be given on Monday, and the final test on Friday.   The assigned workbook pages are from Volume 2, pages 29-31.  All spelling work should be in cursive.  

Reading - We will be working on the reading strategy of identifying the problem and the solution.  Most stories involve a problem for the character to solve, and the solution to the problem may come after others have been tried.  The students will practice their reading strategies  as they read the book Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehret for the next few weeks.  

English -   The students will learn how to write using singular and possessive nouns.  A test is planned for  Friday of this week over  Unit 2 nouns.  The students will bring homework home to help them review and practice the skills that they have learned throughout the chapter.

Science - We will study behavioral adaptations such as hibernation and migration.  The students will understand the difference between learned behaviors and instincts.  There will be a test over chapter 3 lessons 1-3 on Tuesday of next week.
