News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Dec. 17-21

Math - In math this week, we will review elapsed time, and the kids will have a quiz on elapsed time on Thursday of this week.  The students will also work on using algebra to change units of time.  They will learn that when you go from a shorter unit to a longer unit you need to divide, for example: How many minutes in 3 hours.  60 divided by 3. When you go from a longer unit to a shorter unit you multiply, for example how many days are in 2 years?  365 x  2.  Calculators will be allowed while we are doing this section. 

Spelling This week in spelling the students will be working with words that have the sounds of /k/, /ng/, and /kw/.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 9-11 in volume 2, or activities.  There will be a test on Friday.

English- The students will review singular and plural nouns.  They will write the nouns ending with y and irregular plural nouns correctly. They will also form possessive singular nouns correctly.

Reading - We will be working on predicting outcomes.  Readers can often guess ahead of time, or predict, what will happen in a story, based on information the author has given.  Additionally, readers can change or adjust their predictions as they read.

Social Studies - The students will be working with Inspiration, a computer program, to make a timeline of the Cherokee Life from the 1400's-2000.

Science- In science this week, the students will review animal adaptations.  The students will  identify and classify animals according to their physical and behavioral adaptations this week.

Math- The students will be able to finish their tests on Monday.  I sent home a review sheet so that they can review the skills.  We will write an extended response, and begin chapter 6 on Time and Temperature.  It would help your child to practice telling time using both a digital and an analog clock.  They will need to use a digital clock to tell time before and after the hour.They will also understand elapsed time on the clock and on the calendar.  This is knowing how much time has passed from the beginning to the end of an activity.

Spelling - This week is a review unit. The students will be responsible for completing pages 187-189.  Their will be a test on Friday.

Reading - This week we will continue to work on organizing and classifying skills as we read our the stories in our anthology.  They will also work on dictionary skills.  The students will be assessed on the skills we have been learning over the last couple of weeks.

English - The students are finishing up their descriptive essays on their Southeast Animals.  They have also been writing expository essays on special traditions they have during the month of December. This week we will begin a unit on nouns.  They will be able to identify nouns and proper nouns in a sentence.

Science We will begin a unit on Adaptations.  The students will discover how the bodies of animals help them meet their needs.  They will understand the basic needs of all animals, and they will explain how adaptations help living things meet their needs.

Social Studies -    The students will learn about the people who helped shape the Southeast beginning with the Cherokee Native Americans.  We will be learning about their culture and discovering how their life changed after the Europeans arrived. This week we will have our Southeast Resource Day on Thursday. We will have a feast of citrus fruits, rice, peaches, and soybeans.

Math This week in math we will have a quiz over chapter 5, lessons 1-4 on Tuesday.  The students should review the skills we have learned using the worksheets from their folders.  They can also use their books.  We will then learn the Predict and Test problem solving strategy and work with inequalities.  I will begin sending home division facts for the students to practice. A test over chapter 5 will be given on Friday of next week.

Spelling - The students will work with words that have the sounds of /or/, /ur/ and /yoor/.  They will work on pages 167-169 or activities for the week.

English  In English this week the students will proofread their descriptive essays on their southeast animal.  I will conference with them and they will type their final drafts on the computer.  They will also take a pretest for our next grammar unit which is on nouns.

Reading       This week we will continue to work on summarizing. We will also work on the strategies of questioning, categorizing, and classifying.  Recognizing the question a story may raise is a good way to make you understand it.  Also, as people read, they wonder about the things they are reading and they form questions in their mind.  Good readers usually do this without thinking.  The students will practice the questioning strategy next week.  Classifying involves grouping like items, and categorizing involves naming the group.  Grouping the item makes it easier to remember them.  Students will also classify and categorize information in the stories they read next week.

Social Studies - This week the students will describe the climate of the Southeast.  They will examine hurricanes and their effects on the land and lives of people who live where hurricanes are common.  They will also, identify ways in which resources of the southeast are used, and where renewable and nonrenewable resources are found in the southeast.  A test is planned for Friday of this week over chapter 6.

The students should know:
 all vocabulary
understand the main concepts from the chapter
land forms of the southeast and characteristics of them- see the model they made in folder.
 climate of the southeast
 first uses for lighthouses
animals of the southeast as discussed in their books and where they live?
 differences between renewable and nonrenewable resources, what they are used for, and be able to identify those in the southeast
 crops of the southeast and why they grow well there
explain what a hurricane is and how it can be dangerous
What are your favorite places in the southeast that we have learned about?  Would you like to visit them? Why?

Science The students have been researching life cycles of animals and making comparisons between them. There is a science test planned for Wednesday of this week over chapter 2 lessons 2 & 3 only.They should study all papers in their folder and the textbook.

The students should know:
all vocabulary
understand the parts of a plant and their function
understand how the different plants reproduce (ferns, mosses, tubers)
Be able to draw the life cycle of a moth and a sea horse (see textbook)

Math - We will begin a new unit this week.  The students will study the properties of multiplication and they will write multiplication and division expressions and find the value of the expressions.  They will also learn the orders of operations.  They will follow the orders of operations to find the value of each expression.  We will continue to review multiplication and division facts, and  a  fact test will be given each Friday, so the students should continue to study their facts.There will be a quiz over chapter 5 lessons 1-4 on Tuesday, Dec. 4th.

Spelling - This week the students will be working with words that have the /ir/,/ar/ sounds.  They will be working on pages 152-154 in their books. If they passed the pretest, they will do the activities assigned for the week.  There will be a test on Friday of this week.

Reading Over the next couple of weeks we will be reviewing the skills that we have gone over since the beginning of the year.  We'll also work on summarizing and making generalizations.  In writing summaries, your child will learn to pick out the main points or events of a story or passage and concisely put them in their own words.  In making generalizations, the stu dents will learn that generalizations are broad statements that are true most of the time, and are based on fact or good reasons, and may include words like always and most.

English - We will continue our work with descriptive writing. The students will research an animal from the southeast, and they will write a descriptive paragraph on it.  They are working on using a variety of sentences and figurative language in their descriptive, as well as including an interesting hook and zinger of a closing.

Social Studies - The students will work on their maps of the Southeast.  This is due on Wednesday of this week.  There will be a southeast map test on Thursday.  They will place the states correctly on the map along with the important water areas- Mississippi River, Atlantic Ocean, and The Gulf of Mexico.  They can earn extra points for knowing their capitals, but they are not expected to know them.  They will review the major land forms of the southeast, including barrier islands, wetlands, inner and outer coastal plains, Piedmont  Appalachian Mountains.

Science - In science this week, we will review the life cycle of flowering plants, and compare that to those that reproduce using only spores.The students will also order and describe the stages of different animals' life cycles They will be able to describe how some animals grow and develop.  A test  over chapter 2 lessons 2 & 3 is scheduled for Wednesday, December 5th.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Nov. 5-Nov. 16

Math-This week of  Nov. 12, the students will be given 6,7, 8's & 9's to study.  They will need to learn those facts by Friday, Nov. 16th.  They will review problem solving that involves multiplication and division.    They will also be using algebra to find the missing factors.They will use related sentences and their fact families to help them solve these problems.
There is a test scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20th over chapter 4.

Spelling- This week the students will work with words that have the sound of /ou/ as in pound, and the sound as in jaw.  They will be assigned workbook pages 117-119.

Reading - This week the students will continue to work on solving mysteries for the beginning of the week. Our focus strategy this week will be sequencing of events.  Our reading skills will be: contractions and antonyms.

English- We will continue our unit on descriptive writing.  They will  read passages in books that have lots of figurative language and description.  They will learn about similes and metaphors and work to identify them in their reading and also include them in their writing. They will begin a descriptive writing project.  The students will describe animals of the Southeast Region.

Science- The students will learn how plants make their own food and compare and contrast the life cycles of plants from seeds, and plants from spores. They will also understand animal life cycles.  They will study animals with direct development and those that go through a  metamorphosis.

Social Studies - The students will continue to study the culture of the Native Americans of the Northeast, the Narragansett. They will describe key events that affected the Narragansett way of life once European settlers arrived.  They will describe what goods the Europeans and Native Americans traded, and they will explain why the Iroquois Confederacy was established.

A test is scheduled for Thursday, November 15th over chapter 5 lesson 1.  More information will follow.

Math- This week we will continue to work on multiplication facts. The students should be working on their squares, twos, fives, 3's and 4's this week week.  They will should know the terms: factors(numbers being multiplied), products (answer to a multiplication equation), dividend (the number that is being divided), divisor (the number that is doing the dividing) and quotient (answer to a division problem).

Spelling - This week in spelling the focus will be on more long and short vowel sounds.  The students will work on WB pages 90-101 or activities.  There will be a test on Friday of this week.

Reading  Mysteries will be the focus in reading next week. We will begin by learning vocabulary words that are typically associated with mysteries, such as “suspect”, “evidence” and “suspense”. All students will read and study “The Case of the Purloined Pachyderm”.  While reading this mystery, and other mystery stories, students will be studying the format of a mystery, and using the reading strategies of monitoring and clarifying. Students will take a mystery vocabulary  QUIZ on 11/1.

English - We will work on using quotation marks and titles correctly.  There will be an English test on Chapter 5 Capitalization and Punctuation on Friday of this week. There will be homework each evening to help the students review and study for the test.

Social Studies This week we will learn the culture of the Native Americans who once lived in the Northeast Region, the Narragansett and the Iroquois. The students will learn and understand how their life changed after the Europeans moved in.

Science - The students will be finishing their invertebrate posters this week.  There will be a science test over chapter 1 lesson 3 on Wednesday of this week. (How Animals are Classified) 
They should know:
 all vocabulary
two  groups that the animal kingdom is classified into
 5 animal classes of vertebrates and be able to tell at least two physical traits of each
know examples of each of the classes of vertebrates

Math - In math this week, we will begin a unit on multiplication and division.  The students will understand that multiplication is repeated addition and division is repeated subtraction.  They will recognize the relationship between multiplication and division.  On Wednesday, we will begin a program called multiplication in 7 days.  The students will bring home facts that they will be responsible for learning.  We are asking parents to help their child learn these facts.  After practicing the facts, please sign the sheet and return it to school with your child.  They will take a test in math the next day to determine if they have mastered the facts.  A grade will be taken on each of these tests.  Another note will come home notifying you of the facts they mastered and or need to still practice.  


Spelling - This will be a review unit.  There will be no pretest this week.  There will be a test on Friday on all 30 words.  The students will all be responsible for completing the workbooks pages for the week pages 87-89.

Reading - Together we will write a response to the story, because of Winn Dixie.  The students will use the their own ideas and text clues to help them answer a question about the story.  We are having our Celebration of Knowledge party on Friday.  The permission slips have gone home for the Movie Because of Winn Dixie.  We will have a party just as they did in the story. Our menu: Egg Salad Sandwiches, "Dump Punch", Pickles and "Littmus Lozenges".   The students will decide on the theme.

This week we will also  read the story of The Parcel Post Kid, by Michael O. Tunnel.  This piece is a nonfiction story set in 1914, which tells the tale of a young girl whose parents mail her to her grandmother because it is cheaper than paying her train fare.  While reading the story, students will be reviewing the strategies and skills that we have studied so far this year, with particular emphasis on predicting and making inferences

Science  In science this week, the students will create posters showing their knowledge of  the five classes  invertebrates. 

Social Studies - The students will continue to learn about the resources of the Northeast Region.  There will be a test on Friday of this week over the Northeast Region. Chapter 4.  The students should study:
all vocabulary, and all sheets in their folder:
know how Niagara Falls was formed and its importance to the area
know the mountain ranges  that are part of the Appalachian Mountains
largest of the Finger Lakes and understand the importance of this lake to the grapes that  are grown around it
 difference between the Maine Coast line and the New Jersey Coast Line.

Math - This week in math there will be a quiz over lessons 1-3 on Tuesday.  This will cover math properties, expressions and equations.  The students should review their textbook as well as the sheets in their binders.  They will also practice working backwards to solve problems with elapsed time and figure out patterns of numbers and write rules to go with them.  There is a test that is scheduled for Friday of this week over chapter 3.  The students should bring their books home and use the sheets in their binders to help them study for this test.

Spelling - This week our lesson focus is on homophones.  These are words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. They will be assigned workbook pages 67-69 throughout the week.  If they are in the pretest group, they will be assigned activities throughout the week.

ReadingIn reading this week, the students will focus on noting details in a story. They will learn that details may give information, explain ideas, and reveal characters' feelings.  We will be reading both fiction and nonfiction passages as we work on these skills. 

We will finish Because of Winn Dixie this week.  There will be a vocabulary and comprehension test on Friday of this week.  They will be able to use their book for this.


English - This week in English there will be an abbreviation quiz on Tuesday.  We will review on Monday. The students should bring home a review sheet on Monday to help them practice writing abbreviations of days and months and other important abbreviations.  

Social Studies - In social studies this week, the students will work on their map of the Northeast. They will finish their map keys and then use their keys to place the symbols on the map in the correct spots.  The symbols will represent the main mountain ranges that make up the Appalachian Mountains, and they will show the differences in the coastlines of the different states as you travel from the northern states to the southern states in the Northeast Region.  

Science - The students will investigate vertebrates and invertebrates this week.  The will learn about the 5 classes of vertebrates.  They will also learn about the different classes of invertebrates.

Math - We will begin a new chapter this week using Algebra with Addition and Subtraction.  Our first lesson will be on the properties of addition.  We did go over the commutative property today, so you may want to ask your child if they can tell you what it is and give you an example of the commutative property( It says that numbers can be added in any order and the sum will be the same. Ex. 2 + 4= 4 + 2)  They will also learn the associative property and the identity property.  They will bring home sheets that have these properties explained on them.  The students will also write and evaluate addition and subtraction expressions.  Please look in their math folder next week for explanations and examples.  They can also keep their book at home, so that you can review this with them or use it as a resource.

Spelling - No spelling this week.

Reading - We will continue to study text organization with non-fiction articles.Many non-fiction authors organize their selections in time order.They also use features such as headings, pictures, captions, and charts to help the reader better understand the information.  We will continue to apply our reading strategies to our story Winn Dixie.

English - The students have been applying their sentence writing skills as they create their own comic strips.  They are using a variety of sentences in their comics as well as trying to write more compound sentences.  This week they will review their use of capital letters with names of people, pets, places, and things.  They will also work with writing abbreviations.  There will be a quiz on Tuesday, October, 16th over abbreviations. 

Science- We will begin our next unit with a classification activity.  The students will classify dinosaurs according to their physical traits.  Then we will move into our unit How are Animals classified?  They will classify animals into two categories-vertebrates and invertebrates.  

Social Studies - The students are making mind maps to help them understand how Niagara Falls were created.  We should finish them on Tuesday.  Please ask them to share them with you, so they can practice explaining how they were formed.  We will continue to study the land and resources of the Northeast. The students will learn about the Appalachian  Trail and the mountain ranges that cover the Northeast Region.  They will also learn about the coastline of the Northeast Region, and notice the differences between those states that are located way up north to the states that are further south in the region.  They will be making their own maps and keys to show these physical traits of the Northeast.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room October 1-October 5

The students are working toward having a pizza party during lunch on Friday of this week.  If they can collect enough Beenies on the tree for following directions and good behavior throughout the week, they will earn the party.

I will let you know on Thursday, so you will know whether to send a lunch or not.

A permission slip is also coming home for viewing the movie "How to Eat Fried Worms" which will be shown on Friday afternoon to help us celebrate our worm unit success.

Math - This week in math the students will continue to work on addition and subtraction of 3 & 4 digit numbers with regrouping.  There will a quiz over this skill on Tuesday.  A chapter 2 test is planned for Thursday of this week.  The students should review all the skills in the chapter. Please review the sheets in their folders as well.

Spelling - The students will be working with words that have the long and short u spelling patterns.  They should write their spelling words on Monday.  After that, they  will have a spelling page assigned each evening to be completed by the next day.  There will be a test on Friday of this week.  If your child has passed the pretest with 95% or better he/she will work on activities throughout the week.  All spelling work should be done in cursive.

English We will begin a new unit in English.  This week the students will work on using a variety of sentences in their writing.  They will also work on capitalization of names of people, pets, places, and things, along with writing abbreviations correctly.

Reading - In reading this week the students will continue to read Because of  Winn Dixie and review understanding author's point of view.  Our new strategy this week is recognizing text structure in reading non-fiction text, and our reading skill is understanding multi-meaning words-homophones.

A Time for Kids magazine will go home this week. The students are encouraged to read the articles and discuss them with you.  They will have a quiz over this on Friday.

Science- We will wrap up our worm unit with a worm race on Thursday.  The information went home last week.  The students are encouraged to read the requirements for the track carefully.  We have gone over them as well in class.  All tracks and worms are due back on Wednesday.

I will be giving a retake quiz on the scientific method on Wednesday.  Now that they  have worked with it for a whole week during our worm experiments, I feel that they have a better understanding of the steps.

Social Studies - We will begin our "travels" through the United States regions this week.  The Northeast is the first region we will "travel" to. The students will be given a rater sheet to follow and they will fill in and color a map of the Northeast region.  This will be due on Thursday, and there will be a quiz on Friday.  The students should study the states and bodies of water in the Northeast. They will be given extra points for knowing the capitals of those states.  Spelling does not count, but I need to be able to recognize the state written.

Math - In math this week, the students will be using estimation.  The worksheet in their folder shows how they have been taught it in class, so if they need any help you can refer to this sheet.   They will round numbers and estimate the answers.  They will also use a mental math strategy called the Break Apart Method.  

Spelling - In spelling this week the students will work on the Long and short vowel word patterns of A and O.  The students will be assigned the spelling pages each day this week.  If they passed the pretest, they will work on activities each day.  There will be a test on Friday of this week

Reading  This week we will continue reading Because of Winn Dixie.  The vocabulary words for the week are: pathological fear, criminal, ignorant, comforted, sorrow, lozenge.   Our  reading strategy this week is to determine author's viewpoint. Author's viewpoint refers to the author's opinion, ideas of what is important or attitude. The author might give their opinion directly or you might have to infer the information by reading clues or other information that the author provides.. We will also work on the skill of putting words in alphabetical order.

English - There is a test on Wednesday of this week over unit 1, The Sentence.  The students will have a homework assignment each night to help them practice the skills.  There is a lot of practice at the end of the chapter to help them review the skills.  Understanding the complete and simple subject and predicate of a sentence seems to be more difficult for them, so any extra practice will be a benefit.   

Science - We will begin our worm study this week.  The students will set up their experiments each day and then test their hypothesis.  They will draw conclusions and then use these conclusions to create a worm track for our worm races which will be next week.  More information will follow about the worm track on Friday.  They will be asked to bring in new worms for the race because, their worms will be tired out after being tested all week.

Social Studies - There will be a test on Thursday of this week over chapter 2 lessons 2 & 3.  They should study the worksheets in their binders, know all vocabulary from the lessons, and study the key concepts in each lesson. Pages 46-59

Math - There will be a math test on Tuesday of this week over chapter 1.  The students should have been bringing their math textbooks home to study with since last week.  They should also look back in their math folders to see the skills that we have worked on throughout this unit.  A review sheet will go home on Monday as well.

Spelling - The word pattern this week is words that have long vowel a and e sounds.   The students will be responsible for completing w.b. pages 17-19 in their workbook throughout the week.  If they pass out of the words they will have alternate activities to do.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading - The children will continue to read Because of Winn Dixie - They will have a vocabulary quiz over the words from chapters 1-4 on Thursday of this week. A sheet will go home with them on Monday with the words and explanation.

A new TFK will go home this week.  The students will have an activity sheet to go with it that is due on Friday.  They should read their TFK throughout the week, and it would be great for them to have some discussions with you about it at  the dinner table, in the car, before they go to bed etc.  They will have a quiz over the articles on Friday.  They may use their magazine to look back for the info.  They should be sure to keep their magazine in their binder.

English - The students will learn about the simple subject and predicate of a sentence this week, and  they will review run-on sentences.  There will be  a final test over chapter 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

As they practice their free writing, they will work on putting their voice into their writing.  They will practice writing  hooks (introductions) and  zingers (closings)  using questions and exclamations.

Science - We will continue our study of the Scientific Method.  We will set up a couple of experiments using the Scientific Method.  They will test buoyancy of two objects and they will test the strength of two buildings that they create.  There will be a quiz over the Scientific Method on Wednesday of this week.  The students will need to know the 5 Steps of the Scientific Method and recognize examples of each step.

Information about our worm study will come home on Thursday of this week.  The students will be learning about the habitats of worms, so that they can create a habitat for their worm, which will need to come in by next Monday, September 24.  They should not be brought in early, because they may not survive.  If you  can bring in more than one worm we would appreciate it.  It will help out those who can not bring one it.

Social Studies - The students will learn about what it means to be a good citizen and the responsibilities that U.S. citizens have.  A test is planned over Chapter 2 lessons 2 & 3 on Wednesday of next week.  More information will follow.

Math- This week in math the students will get back their quiz from lessons 1&3.  Please look for it in their folders to see how they did. I ask for a parent's signature if the grade is below a C, so that parents will know that their child needs a review of those skills.  This week the students will compare numbers into the millions and order them from greatest to least.  They will also work on the problem solving skill of using logical reasoning. All their math papers should be kept in their math binder, so that if you are wondering what skill we covered for that day, you will see the work they did during class.  They may also keep their text book at home, so that they can see the lesson's skills there as well.  There is a test planned for Friday of this week over chapter 1. 

Spelling -  This week in spelling we will again review most commonly misspelled words.  The students will have a pretest on Monday.  There will be an assignment given every day that needs to be turned in the next day.  There will be a test on Friday.


Reading - In reading this week the students will work on story structure and summarizing. We will begin a new book called Because of Winn-Dixie.  As we read this story, the children will review the elements of  non-fiction literature, and they will practice writing in complete sentences to answer questions.

A Time for Kids magazine will go home today.  The students will also bring home an activity that goes with it.  They may work on it in class if they are finished with their daily work, or they should bring it home for homework.  It is due on Friday.  On Friday there will be a quiz over the articles in the TFK, so they should be reading it throughout the week. Discussing the articles in the magazine with them, at the dinner table, traveling in the car, before they go to bed, etc. would be very beneficial to them.

English -  The students will learn about the subject and predicates of sentences, along with the simple subject and simple predicates of sentences.  There will be a DOL quiz on Thursday of this week that covers capitalization of proper nouns and punctuation at the ends of sentences.  A review DOL will be sent home for homework on Wednesday, and they can also bring home their writing journals where they have the DOL practice sentences for review as well.

Science - You may want to ask your child about the buildings that they made on Friday.  Which one was the strongest and why?  You may have a discussion about what is a model and  why people need to make models before building the real thing. This week the students will review the tools for inquiry.  They will learn about the scientific method.

Social Studies - This week the students will learn about the U.S. government as they complete a Patriotic Quest.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Sept. 4-7

Math - In math this week, we will continue our work with place value through the millions.  The students are learning how to read, and write numbers in standard form and expanded form through the millions.  There will be quiz on Thursday over Chapter 1, lessons 1 & 3.  The students can bring their books home to help them study.  They should also review the sheets in their binders.

Spelling - This week in spelling,  the students will be tested on those words which are most commonly used in their writing.  Last week they took a pretest to help them know the words that they would be responsible for spelling correctly on the test on Friday.  If they passed the test with 95% or better, then they received an alternate list of 10 words to study.  They should have a sheet in their spelling folder with their words and an explanation of what they will do with them.

This first week of spelling all children will have an assignment each day which they will be responsible for showing me the next morning.  On Friday, I will collect one of the assignments from the week to grade.  They should keep all of their assignments for the week in their spelling folder.

They will be practicing their cursive on their assignments, and they  should write all of their spelling assignments in cursive.  This is the one subject that I require all assignments and tests to be in cursive.

We will have a test over the words on Friday of this week.  Those student who passed the pretest with 95% or higher will take a test on their alternative list.  If they receive a 90% or higher on this test, they will earn 1 or 2 points onto their pretest score.  If they score lower than a 90%, they will maintain the score they received on their pretest as their final grade.

Reading - The students will continue their review of the reading strategies as we read The Pumpkin Runner by Marsha Diane Arnold.  The students will review how to write a summary, adding the most important details in order using transition words correctly.

English - We will begin a unit on sentences.  The students will understand what a sentence is and practice writing good sentences.  They will understand questions, statements, commands, and exclamations and be able to write them correctly with capital letters and end marks.  There will be a DOL Quiz on Friday of this week.  The students will practice editing sentences during the week which help them practice specific skills.  This week the skills that they will be tested on are using capital letters and end marks correctly.

Science - The students will learn the tools of inquiry which they will be using throughout the year.  They will use their inquiry strategies as they work with a team to make models of buildings using straws, paperclips, and tape.  We will test the strength of each of the buildings to see which one is the strongest, and they will draw conclusions about how strong buildings are made.

Social Studies - The students will participate in a textbook scavenger hunt to help them get to know their social studies books.    Our first unit is a government unit.  The students will be on a "Patriotic Quest" as they learn about the United States government.

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

All 4th & 5th grade students have the opportunity to sign up for Intramural Games.  This is a "free" after school program that allows your child to stay active.  Permission slips will be sent home on Monday with your child.  Please return to Mrs. Cushing by Friday, August 31.

This week we will spend much of our time getting to know each other and organizing our things.  The children will practice the three behaviors that we will continue working on this year (Be safe. Be responsible. Be respectful.)

Math - We will begin math on Wednesday of this week.  We will spend some time getting to know each other in math. Then we will begin the year with understanding place value.  The students will model, read, write, and identify the place value of whole numbers through millions. 

If you need to know how a skill has been taught in class, you can refer to their math binder.  Please keep all papers in their math binder.  We will clean them out at the end of a chapter together.  They should only take out the papers that are in the back of their binder that are marked take home.

Spelling - Each student will be given a pretest on Monday.  This week, however, we will have our pretest on Friday, since we do not have school on Monday.  A list will go home in their spelling binder with the new pattern.  Every day they will be given a homework assignment to complete at home.  Tests will be given on Friday. If there is no school on Friday, tests will be given on Thursday.  

English - We will review what a sentence is and the different kinds of sentences. (statements, questions, exclamations, and commands) They will practice writing sentences correctly during Daily Oral Language (DOL).  There will be DOL quizzes to assess their learning of the skills from that week.  

Reading - This week in reading the students will review and practice their reading strategies as they read the story The Pumpkin Runner by Marsha Diane Arnold.  The reading strategies that we will focus on are preview/infer, phonics/decoding, question, monitor/clarify, summarize, and evaluate.

Science - In science this week the students will participate in a textbook scavenger hunt.  This hunt will help them become familiar with the parts of their book.  They will learn the tools of inquiry which they will be using throughout the year and safety rules they will need to follow when participating in science class.   

The children will also be working on the study skill of locating answers.  They will learn how to find clue words that they can use to help them skim for answers in the titles, subtitles, captions, and highlighted words, as well as the paragraphs.  

Social Studies - We will begin a U.S. government unit this week.  The students will understand what the Constitution is and why it is important.  They will identify the three levels of government.

English - This week we will work on adverbs.  The students will learn what an adverb is and be able to identify them.  They will also practice writing with adverbs.  

Reading - We will continue to read Charlotte's Web this week.  The students will review the reading strategies and skills that they have learned throughout the year.  

Science- The students will learn about the properties of three different kinds of rocks this week and practice identifying them - igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.     They will also learn about the rock cycle.

Social Studies - The students will continue to learn about the culture of the Native Americans from the West this week.

Math- This week we will have end of the year math assessments on Monday and Tuesday (This is not used as a grade).  We will review using estimation and compatible numbers when estimating the quotient.  The students will learn long division with 3 digit dividends.  Be ready for a quiz on Friday over lessons 1-3.  There will be at test over chapter 11 lsessons  1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 on Tuesday, May 29th.

Spelling -  This is a review week.  The students will be responsible for pages 247-249. There will be a test on Friday.

Reading - Our focus this week is on the reading strategy of monitor/clarify. Students should monitor how well they understand a story. If they don't understand something, they can reread or read ahead for help.

We will continue to read Charlotte's Web this week.

English - A test over pronouns, unit 6, is planned for Friday of this week.  Be on the look out for homework to come home that will help the students review for this test.  They should bring their books home each night to review.  There is a lot of practice at the end of the chapter for review.

Science - We will begin a unit on the rock cycle.  The students will  identify minerals this week by studying their properties.  They will then identify rocks by studying the minerals that make them up and their properties.

Social Studies - The students will learn about the Native American tribe of the west, the Tlingit.  They will learn about their culture and make totem poles which were placed outside of their homes to represent the history of a family.

Math- This week in math we will begin division with remainders.  The students will  work with counters to understand the concept of remainders.  Then they will learn to divide two digit by 1 digit numbers  using long division.

Spelling - This week the students will be working with words that have final schwa sounds.  These ares sounds that have a lazy a sound as in final or middle. They also are words that have ar, er, and or t the end.  The workbook pages this week will be stapled together in their binder. -  Pages 237-239 will be due this week.

Reading - In reading this week, the students will practice making inferences.  Readers must make inferences, or "read between the lines,"  when an author does not tell the reader everything.  Readers read between the lines by applying what they already know to story clues given by the author.


English - In English this week, the students will continue their work with pronouns.  They will  practice using possessive pronouns such as their, his, hers, and its.  They will also work with pronouns that are contractions.

Science - This week there will be a test on Wednesday over Simple Machines chapter 17.  The students should know:
All vocabulary
All key concepts from the book
Scientists meaning for work
Understand how a wheel and axle works to be a simple machine
Understand how each simple machines work and what they are made up of.
Understand a fulcrum in relation to a a person holding a fishing pole

Social Studies There will be a test in social studies this week over chapter 12, the land and climate of the West Region.  The students should know.

I want to thank all the parents for sending in money to help purchase Ms. Lee's going away gift.  I was able to purchase so many things that she could use for her classroom along with getting her a gift card to Barnes and Noble and The Chalkboard.  She was overwhelmed by your kindness.

Math- This week in math we will will review estimating the product of 2 digit by 2 digit problems.  The students will then learn to multiply two digits by two digits to get an exact answer. They will have a test on Thursday over chapter 10 lessons 1, 2, 3, and 6.  They should bring their books home so that they can use it to help them study.

Spelling - This week in spelling the students will work with words that have silent consonants.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 228-230.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading Our reading target for the week is to identify topic, main idea, and supporting details.  Topic is what the whole text is about.  The main ideas are important points about each topic.  Each paragraph can have its own main idea.  Supporting details are facts and examples that support each main idea.


We will have a comprehension test and vocabulary test on Wednesday of this week.  The vocabulary was sent home on Friday so the kids could begin studying for it if they want.  The comprehension test will cover the whole book.


English - The students will finish up their robot expository essays this week. They will have a test over their expository writing skills on Thursday of this week.  I will give them a writing prompt that they will have to write an expository essay on.  We will also continue our work with pronouns.  The students will practice writing using pronouns, and using I and me correctly.


Science - The children will learn about other simple machines that help people do work this week.  The focus will be on inclined planes, screws and wedges.  A test over simple machines is planned for next Wednesday, May 16th.  


Social Studies - This week in social studies the students will learn about the climates and the resources  in the West Region.

Math This week in math the students will be working on Multiplying multiples of 10,20,30,40 and so on . They will be introduced to 2 digit by 2 digit  multiplication.  Any extra help from home on this skill is greatly appreciated.  Please look in their folder for the strategy we use in class if you need help. 


Spelling This week the students will be working with words that have unusual spellings.  They will work on pages 213-215 in their spelling workbook.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading-This week we will focus on the reading target skill of comparing and contrasting.  Comparing means showing similarities.  Contrasting means showing differences.  By comparing and contrasting one thing with another, readers can remember more of the information.

 We will also continue reading Earthquake Terror.  There will be a comprehension quiz over chapters 9-12.  on Thursday of this week.

English-This week in English the students will continue to learn about pronouns. The focus this week will be on writing with pronouns, combining sentences, using I and Me, possessive pronouns and contractions with pronouns. The students will be periodically assessed using their workbook pages.

Science- This week in science the students will continue to learn about simple machines. The class will be focusing on pulleys and wheels and axles. There will be an open book quiz over these two concepts. The students also received an optional assignment last week to make a catapult, which will be due on Wednesday. The students will be launching marshmallows from their creations on Thursday for Miss Lee's last day.

Social Studies- This week in social studies the students will continue to learn about the West region. The class will continue to discuss the landforms of the west (volcanoes, mountain ranges, national parks) and will begin to learn about the various climates.The students will be joining Mr. Trinco's class on Tuesday for a picture slideshow of various areas in the West. There will be an open book assessment over the landforms on Wednesday.

In an effort to make the transition to 5th grade as smooth as possible, the fourth grade teachers will be enforcing the 5th grade policy for late work during the month of May. The policy is as follows:
Any assignment that is late, but not taken for a grade
, will receive a late slip. The student will have one point taken out of his/her homework bank. (NO CHANGE).

Any assignment that is late and taken for a grade
will receive a late slip, but no points will be lost from the homework bank. If the assignment is turned in one day late, the final grade will be reduced by 10%. If the assignment is more than one day late, but turned in before the unit test, the final grade will be reduced by 25%. If the assignment is not turned in before the unit test. the final grade will be a zero

 Math- This week in math the students will continue to learn about multiplication patterns and strategies such as rounding or using mental math. The students will learn how to do long multiplication with 1-digit by 2-digit numbers, as well as multiplying 3-digit and 4-digit numbers and money. The students will be wrapping up chapter 9 with multiplying with zeros. There will be a test over Chapter 9 lessons 9.1, 9.2, 9.4, 9.5, and 9.6 on Friday.

 What To Know for the Test: 
The students will need to know how to round numbers to estimate a product, how to use the zero pattern to multiply numbers, how to multiply 1-digit numbers by 2,3, and 4 digit numbers and money, and how to multiply numbers with zeros by 1-digit numbers.

 Spelling-This week in spelling the students will be learning about 3 syllable words. The students will be required to split the words into their 3 syllables, understanding what syllable is stressed when you pronounce it. There will be a spelling test on Friday.

English- This week in English, the students will continue to work on their expository writings, and will begin a unit on pronouns. The students will be learning about singular and plural pronouns, object and subject pronouns, and the use of I and Me. Students will also be required to write with pronouns. There will be an assessment at the end of the week to make sure the students understand these concepts. 


What To Know for the Quiz: 
Students will need to know what a pronoun is, and be able to replace names with the appropriate pronoun.


Reading- This week the class will continue to read Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehret and have Small Steps as a read aloud.   While using these two book, we will be focusing on two important skills: following directions and summarizing. When reading a passage that describes how to complete a task, readers should look for clue words such as first, next, and finally to clarify the order of steps. They also must understand that steps must be followed in the correct order, in order to complete the task. Summarizing involves retelling a story in your own words and including only the most important events. All students will study these skills while reading Earthquake Terror There will be a vocabulary quiz 1-4/comprehension 3-5  quiz on Tuesday of this week Chapter .  The students were given this information last week.

The students will have homework each night. Some nights they may be asked to read a chapter and complete a journal, and other nights it may be to reread chapters to study for upcoming quizzes. Quizzes will include comprehension questions and vocabulary words.



Social Studies- The students will be assessed on their understanding of the Navajo people. They will be able to use their book for this information.   We will then begin a unit on the West Region.   The students will need to complete a map outline, labeling each state of the West region using a rubric. A map assessment will be done on Thursday, where the students will need to label the states in the West Region.The students will also learn about the physical characteristics of the land, including mountains and volcanoes.


Science- This week the class will begin their unit on simple machines. The students will be learning about simple machines such as levers, wedges, wheel and axle, inclined planes, wedges, and screws. The students will see demonstrations of these different simple machines and will also read about them in their textbook. The students will be presented with an opportunity to build a simple catapult if they so chose.
