News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 28-March 4

Things to Remember:

Remember: Since this is a testing week, the students should try to get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and bring a healthy snack.

Math - ISAT Testing. This will be a great time to work on multiplication and division facts at home.

Spelling - No spelling this week.

Reading - ISAT testing - Work on Poetry at home. Plan on doing one activity an evening for your poetry booklet. Poetry Booklets are due on March 8.

English- This week Adverbs will be introduced. The students will know that adverbs tell when, where, and how. Many adverbs begin with ly.

Science - You may want to ask your child about the electromagnets that we made in class last week. What did we use to make them? What did they do? What do they make a compass do?
What are some ways that electro magnets are used in our everyday life? This week we the students will learn about generators and motors - How are they alike and how are they different?

Social Studies - The students will be able to explain some of the events that forced the Native American tribes in the Midwest to give up their land. They will compare and contast a home built out of sod and one built out of logs by the settlers and understand some of the difficuties the settlers faced in farming the land.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb.21- Feb. 25

Things to Remember:

Week of Feb. 28 -Conferences

Math- In math this week the students will identify, classify, describe , and make solid figures.

Spelling- We will be working with words that have ed or ing ending. Workbook pages 252-254 will be due on Friday of this week.

Reading -In reading this week our continued target genre is poetry. The students will understand the elements of poetry, and they will work with figurative language such as simile, metaphor, personification, and idioms. A poetry project will be assigned and the students will be working on that in class and at home over the next couple of weeks. Along with poetry, the students will also be working on writing extended responses which will connect with their reading passages.

English - In English this week, The students will learn what an adverb is. They will learn that adverbs tell how, when, and where.

Social Studies - In social studies the students will learn why the Europeans came to the Midwest in the 1600's. They will identify roles of Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette in the fur trade, and understand the role fur trading played in the development of towns in the Midwest.

Science- This week the students will compare different kinds of magnets. How are they alike and different? How are a magnet's magnetic force and magnetic field different?

Spelling - The students will be working with compound words this week. The workbook pages that are assigned and due on Friday are pages 217-219. If students pass out of the pretest then they will work on three activities which are due on Friday.


Reading - In reading this week our target genre is poetry. The students will understand the elements of poetry, and they will work with figurative language such as simile, metaphor, personification, and idioms. A poetry project will be assigned and the students will be working on that in class and at home over the next couple of weeks. Along with poetry, the students will also be working on writing extended responses which will connect with their reading passages.

Math - This week in math the students will identify, classify and describe quadrilaterals.
They will also identify, draw and label parts of a circle. Along with that they will review similar and congruent figures.

English - This week in English the students will write the past tense of irregular verbs and be able to recognize the different forms of the verb be (am, is, are, was, were,). The test on verbs will be on Friday of this week.

Science - This week the students will learn about conductors and insulators. They will discover what happens when a current reaches a conductor and an insulator. They will also understand how a switch works to turn on and off a current.

Social Studies This week we will learn about the early culture of the Ojibwa and describe the ways Ojibwa culture has changed since the mid - 1600's. The Ojibwa have maintained important cultural traditions and have contributed to the culture of the Midwest.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 7-11

Things to Remember:
Monday, February 14 - Valentine's Day Party will begin at 1:30. The students may bring Valentines to share with everyone. There are 24 students in class.
Monday, February 21 - No School, President's Day
Friday, February 25 - End of 2nd trimester


Math - In math this week we will begin a unit on geometry. The students will identify, describe, and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes. They will also measure classify, and draw right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. There will be a fact test on Friday. PLease help your child study for their facts.


Spelling This week in spelling the students will work with words that have the vccv (vowel consonant consonant vowel )pattern. They will learn that when you have two consonants surrounded by vowels you divide between the two consonants then sound out the words.

Reading This week we will begin our study of Poetry. We will focus on some of the elements of poetry including rhyme, sensory words, figurative language, and wordplay. The children will also begin a poetry project. In this project, the children will be learning about and writing nine different kinds of poems. Time will be given in class, but students will also need to work on this project at home. We will be working on Poetry and Figurative Language for the next few weeks.

Your children should show you the notes in their binders. I need them to return a permission slip for the movie Winn Dixie. Also some students volunteered to bring something in for our party on Friday of this week, and I will need a response back from those parents to be sure it is okay.

English - We will continue to study verbs this week. The students will learn to spell verbs in the past tense and identify and write past tense verbs with helping verbs. There will be a quiz to see if the children can identify verbs and helping verbs in a sentence on Tuesday of this week. A test over verbs chapter 3 is planned for Wednesday, February 16.

Social Studies - This week the children will review the water and land of the Midwest. There will be a test on Thursday of this week over chapter 8.
The students should know:

Describe the Badlands millions of years ago
What was the cause of the temperature change of the Badlands
Products of Wisconsin and Illinois
Be able to explain how the Great Lakes were formed
Explain how a lock works and why they were built
Advantages and disadvantages of shipping by barge
Name the 5 Great Lakes
Explain why the prairie better for farming than the Badlands

Science - We will study static and current electricty and the students will recognize how electricty moves in circuits.
