Math The students will understand that perimeter is the distance around an object, and that area is the number of square units needed to cover a surface. They will use formulas to help them find the perimeter and the area of figures. They will also estimate and find the volume of rectangular prisms.

The students will also practice writing explanations to their problem solving.

There will be a quiz over these concepts along with writing an explanation on Thursday of this week.

Spelling - The students will work with words that have prefixes and suffixes this week. They will be responsible for doing workbook pages 109-111. There will be a test on Friday of this week.

English - The students will continue to work on their extended responses during this time.
They will be graded on their content and their conventions (capital letters and end marks).

Reading - We will be using the predict/infer strategy, as well as cause and effect. Thinking about story events and personal knowledge helps readers predict likely events. With cause and effect, students will focus on why story events happen and what happens as a result.

They will review genres of literature- adventures, fables, folktales, historical fiction, mystery, myth, science fiction.

Science
- This week the students will focus on how electricity and magnetism are related. They will investigate how electricity makes a magnet. They will compare the effects of a magnet and an electric current on a compass.

Social Studies - We will travel to the Southwest Region this week. The students will make Southwest maps and take a quiz on Thursday over the states and water areas in the Southwest on Thursday of this week.

Our Valentine's Day Party was a huge success. Thank you so much to the parents for sending in wonderful treats and planning exciting and fun games. A great time was had by all!

Math In math this week, we will be working with customary capacity units of measure and then moving on to metric units of measure. There will be a quiz to show understanding of converting standard units of measure and measuring to the nearest 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 inch on Friday of this week.
The students will also solve different kinds of problems and practice writing explanations to them.

Spelling This week in spelling the students will work with words that have ed and ing endings. They will review the rules for spelling words with special patterns. Workbook pages 252-254 will be assigned this week.

Reading
We will continue to work with our target genre - poetry. The students will understand the elements of poetry, and they will work with figurative language such as simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and idioms. The students are writing different kinds of poems for their poetry books.

The students will also read fiction and nonfiction passages and be assessed in their comprehension and the reading skills and strategies they have learned this year.

English This week the students will work on their written responses to literature. They will read passages and write a response which will include the support of the text, their own ideas, and their knowledge of the overall theme of the passage.

Science We will continue to work with electricity this week. The students will experiment with insulators and conductors of electricity.

Social Studies This week the students will be assessed on their knowledge of the Ojibwa Native Americans of the Midwest. They will be give guidelines to follow to illustrate the Native American culture of the Ojibwa.

Math This week in math we will work on extended responses. We will also begin a unit on measurement. The students will work with customary units to measure to the nearest 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 inch. They will choose the most reasonable units to measure with. They will also use algebra to change customary linear units, weight, and capacity from larger to smaller or smaller to larger units.

Spelling - The students will study compound words this week. They will be assigned workbook pages 217-219 throughout the week. There will be a test on Friday of this week.

English - Comparing with adjectives using more, most, and good and bad will be studied this week. The students will be using adjectives in their poems. There will be a test on Friday of this week on adjectives. Look for homework to come home on Wednesday and Thursday from the textbook.

Reading -In reading next week, our target genre is poetry. The students will understand the elements of poetry, which includes figurative language. The poetry project has been assigned and the students will be working on this in class and at home, over the next couple of weeks. Along with poetry, we will also continue to work on writing extended responses, which will connect with their reading passages.

Science - What are the different ways to light a light bulb using a wire, bulb, and a battery? The students are working with partners to make a poster to show how this is done. You may want to ask them what is necessary to happen for the the bulb to light. The students will also understand static and current electricity.

Social Studies - The students will be making "talking sticks" as used in the Ojibwa culture. In the Ojibwa culture the person who holds the "talking stick" is the only person who should be talking. The others show respect by listening quietly to that person until it is their turn to hold the "talking stick".

Math - This week the students will identify, classify, describe, and make plane and solid figures. They will also identify and describe solid figures by their nets and from different perspectives. There will be a test covering lessons 20.1, 20.2, 20.3, 20.6 from chapter 20 and lessons 21. 1, 21.3, 21.4, on Friday of this week.

Spelling This week in spelling the students will work with more words that follow the VCCV pattern. They will learn that when there are two consonants between two vowels, you divide between the two consonants. Workbook pages 91-93 should be completed this week.

Reading This week we will begin our study of poetry. We will focus on some of the elements of poetry including rhyme, sensory words, figurative language, and wordplay. The children will also begin a poetry project. In this project, the children will be learning about and writing many different kinds of poems. Time will be given in class, but students will also need to work on this project at home. We will be working on poetry and figurative language for the next few weeks.

English - The students will write with adjectives this week. They will use adjectives in their poetry to describe color, size, shape and other details. They will use and identify adjectives that follow the form of be. They will also understand that a, an, and the are special adjectives called article.

We will continue to work on our extended reading responses in both English and Reading.

Science - We will finish putting our human bodies together. Then we will begin a unit on electricity. The Essential Question is: What is Electricity?

Social Studies - We will review the changes in climate and compare the badlands from millions of years ago to today. The students will also understand and explain why the Midwest is an important agricultural region. They will understand irrigation, and how rainfall in the Midwest affects the growth of crops. They will identify crops grown in the Midwest.

We will have a test over the Land and Water of the Midwest on Thursday of this week. The students should study:

The main concepts at the end of each section in the book
Know all vocabulary
Name the five Great Lakes
Be able to explain how the Great Lakes were formed
What effect did changing the flow of the Chicago River have on transporting goods from Lake Michigan? (It made it easier to transport goods to and from Lake Michigan by linking Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River)
Be ready to explain how a lock work and why they are needed
the advantages and disadvantages of shipping by barge(know two advantages and two disadvantages)
Describe the badlands millions of years ago
Why did the climate of the badlands change?
Why are the prairies better for farming than the Badlands?
Why is the Midwest an important agricultural region?
Name at least 5 products that come from the Midwest
Product of Wisconsin?
