News from Mrs. Cavoto's Class Feb. 25-March 1

Spelling - This week the students will work with words that have prefixes and suffixes.  There will be no pretest this week.  The students will be responsible for pages 109-111 in volume 2 workbook.  There will be a test on Friday.

Math - We will have a test this week on chapter 19 on Wednesday of this week.  They should bring their books home to review and they should review the sheets that are in their binders to help them study.  We will  practice solving problems with a written response. They need to show all their work and then write an explanation to show what they did and why they did it.  The children will have homework to help them practice this.  We will also begin a unit on Motion Geometry.  They will identify congruent and similar figures and they will understand and identify  figures with line symmetry and rotational symmetry.

English -This week the students will continue their work with verbs.  They will  identify and write past tense verbs with the helping verbs has, have, or had, with singular or plural subjects.  They will write past tense forms of irregular verbs and recognize the different forms of the verb be.  A test is planned for Tuesday, March 5 over verbs.

Reading- The students will continue to work with writing extended responses to reading.  They will read different genres (myths, folktales, and fables,) as they study character, plot and theme.  They will use the context to help them understand the meanings of words in the story.

Social Studies - This week there will be a test on the past and present culture of the Ojibwa, Chapter 9 lesson 1 on Thursday, Feb. 28th.
The students should know:
Where they lived
How they earned a living
transportation
understand what the land was like
how trade changed their culture
how they keep their heritage alive today
how the Ojibwa use the natural resources

Science- In science this week, we will continue our unit on Simple Machines. The students will understand what a machine is.  They will be able to understand that a machine does not reduce the amount of work that is done.  It reduces the force needed to do the work but it cannot reduce the amount of work done. They will understand how a pulley and a wheel and axle help people do work.

News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 18-22

It was a busy week, and I want to thank those parents who sent items in for both our Resource Day and the Valentine's Day party.  Both were a huge success!

Math This week in math the students will classify triangles as isosceles, scalene, or equilateral and right, acute, or obtuse.  They will also classify 4 sided figures as quadrilaterals, parallelograms  rhombus, rectangles, squares or trapezoids.   They will draw circles and identify the chords, diameter and radius of a circle.  There will be quizzes throughout the week to test the students knowledge of these concepts as we work with them.

Spelling- The students will work with words that have the ed and ing endings.  They will be responsible for w.b. pages 252-254.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading In reading this week the students will continue to work on their poetry and understand the elements of poetry.  They will will also continue to read passages and write extended responses to their reading.

English The students will form the present and past tense of verbs.  They will identify and write past tense verbs with the helping verbs has, have, or had with singular or plural subjects.

Science We will review natural forces and the two factors that affect gravitation between objects ( their mass and the distance between them) We will also review the difference between weight and gravity. We will begin a new unit on simple machines toward the end of the week.

Social Studies This week in social studies, we will begin a unit on the Ojibwa, the Native American group from the Midwest. The students will describe the early culture of the Ojibwa and ways their culture has changed since the mid-1600's.

Our Resource Day in social studies will be on Wednesday of this week.  If you would like to help by sending in one of the following, please let me know.   Cheese,a product of Wisconsin, popcorn a product of the Central Plains because there is enough rain for corn to grow well there, wheat crackers, edemame (soybeans),apple juice, and strawberries)

Math -  We will begin a unit on geometry this week.  The students will identify and draw points, angles and rays. They will also use a protractor to measure and classify angles.  Remember the students can refer to their packets in their folders if you have questions on vocabulary or terms that may be included in the homework.

Spelling  This week the students will be working with compound words.  They will do pages 217-219 in their workbook volume 1, or they will work on assigned activities.

Reading - The students will be writing poetry this week.  They will use colorful language and imagery as they are writing to help create pictures in the minds of their readers.  They will also work on writing extended responses to reading passages.  The skill this week - understanding prefixes and suffixes.

English - We  will continue working with verbs this week.  The students will identify and use the past,
present and future tense of verbs. They will also proofread for subject verb agreement.

Social Studies -There will be a test over chapter 8 Water and Land of the Midwest on Thursday of this week.  We will have Resource Day on Wednesday also.
The students should know:
All vocabulary
All main concepts as shown at the end of readings in the text
What caused the Great Lakes?
How are the Great Lakes connected to the Atlantic Ocean?
What caused the engineers to change the flow of the Chicago River?
Advantages and disadvantages of shipping by barge
Compare the Badlands of long ago to the Badlands of today.  Be sure to include, weather, land, animals
What caused the climate change in the Badlands?
Why is the Midwest an important agricultural region?
Know the crops grown in the Midwest
Understand the importance of irrigation to the Midwest farmers
Know the products of Wisconsin
Why are so many fossils found in the South Dakota Badlands? Why were the fossils not found long ago?

Science - The student will understand why the force of gravity is important.  They will observe the forces involved in circular motion.They will identify several natural forces including gravity and friction.

News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 4-8

Spelling - The spelling words this week will focus on more VCCV (Vowel Consonant Consonant Vowel) words.  Workbook page 91-93 or activities will need to be completed through the week.

Math - In math this week, we will continue our work with graphs.  the students will learn to read and interpret circle graphs, line graphs, and use a coordinate grid.   There will be a final test over chapter 8 on Wednesday of this week.  Have your child practice making their own graphs.  They should be sure to have a title, labels, and interval beginning with 0 at the origin.  

Reading - This week the students reading Family Apart will have a comprehension and vocabulary test on Monday.  They  should know the meanings of the words, and be able to write the words in a good sentence showing they understand the meaning without it being a definition.  The students reading  Earthquake Terror will have their vocabulary test on Monday, and their comprehension test on Tuesday.

The students will write extended responses to literature that they read this week.

We will begin a poetry unit this week.  The students will study different kinds of poems and find the elements of poetry  in them.     They will work with figurative language some of which will be a review and others will be introduced- alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole.  They will then write their own poetry and  make their own poetry books.

English -This week in English the students will begin a unit on verbs.  They will identify and use action verbs, main verbs and helping verbs.

Science - In science this week, the students will  describe the jobs of the nervous, muscular, and skeletal system.  They will also describe how the skeletal and muscular systems work together to move the body.

There will be a test over the Human Body on Friday of this week.  The students should know:
All vocabulary
Understand the steps of the digestive system
Know the purpose of platelets
Understand what happens if you fall and scrape your knee: what is torn and how will the platelets help.
Know the different kinds of joints in the body and be able to give examples of each
Know the kinds of muscles and how they work together
Understand the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles.  Give examples of each.
What are four jobs of the bones
How are messages carried from your brain throughout your body? Be ready to explain using the vocabulary that you have learned about in this lesson.

Social Studies - The students will understand why the Midwest Region is an important agricultural region. They will identify some crops that are grown in the Central Plains and the Great Plains.  A test is planned for Wednesday of next week over chapter 8.
