News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 3-Feb. 7

Monday, Feb. 4 - Six Flags Read to Succeed forms are due
Tuesday, Feb. 4- Early Dismissal 11:00

Math-In math this week we will review using the distributive property to solve division problems.  The students will also estimate and divide three and four digit numbers.  There will be a quiz over lessons 7-9 on chapter 6 on Thursday of this week.  A test is planned for Wednesday, Feb. 12.  over chapter 6.

Spelling - This week the students will work with more words that have the VCCV (Vowel, Consonant, Consonant, Vowel, ) pattern.  They will complete workbook pages 91-93 or spelling activities for the week if they passed out of the pretest.  They will have a test on Friday of this week.

Reading- This week in reading the students will read The Last Dragon they will continue to work on responding to reading with text dependent questions.  They will also use details from the story about characters and events to draw conclusions.

English - The students will type the final copies of their descriptive paragraphs.  We will begin a unit on verbs this week.   They will identify and use action verbs in sentences.

Science - Their will be a test on Tuesday of this week over chapter 3 Adaptations.  The students should study the lesson reviews and all the vocabulary from the chapter.  They should know:
how plants meet their need for food
learned behaviors and examples
instincts and examples of
explain several animal adaptations and how they are used
examples of living fossils, extinct animals and plants - use book for examples
the life cycle of a tree and why each step is important - see picture in folder
how  fossils help scientists learn about animals
animal behaviors that help them meet their basic needs
what happens during hibernation

Social Studies - There will be a social studies test over Chapter 7 lessons 1 & 3 only on Friday of this week.  The students should know:
all vocabulary
Sequoyah
Understand the causes and effects of the Civil war (negative and positive)
Understand the Reconstruction after the Civil War
What are "Jim Crow" laws and what did they cause in the Southeast
Explain how the Cherokee way of like change after the Europeons arrived?
How did Martin Luther King Jr. protest segregation? Why was this good?
Marting Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln are both people that others admire and look up to.  Why are they looked to as heroes? If you had the chance to meet one of these men, who would you like to meet and what would you ask him or say to him.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room January 27-January 31

February 3 - Six Flags Read to Succeed sheets are due.

Math - In math this week there will be a quiz over lessons 1-6 chapter 6 on Tuesday.  The students should practice their long division.  They should look back at the completed pages in their binder to see the skills we have covered.
  They can bring home their book and complete any of the unfinished pages in those lessons to practice as well.

Spelling - This week the students will be spelling words with the VCCV (vowel, consonant, consonant,vowel) pattern.  They will complete pages 59-61 in their workbooks or activities if they passed their pretest.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading- We will continue to work with the problem solution text structure as the students read non-fiction articles. We will work with vocabulary development using synonyms and antonyms.  The students will use dictionary.com to help them find the meanings of vocabulary words.

English-We will continue to work on our Southeast animal descriptive paragraphs.  The students will use their research and knowledge of adjectives, figurative language and imagery as they write their paragraphs.

Science- Their will be a test on Friday of this week over chapter 3 Adaptations.  The students should study the lesson reviews and all the vocabulary from the chapter.  They should know:

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room January 20-24


Monday, Jan. 20th - No School Martin Luther King Day
Tuesday, Jan. 21st- 8:10-9:40 In school field trip DuPage Children's Museum-Wheels, Levers, and Pulleys (volunteers needed)
Feb. 3 - Six Flags Read to Succeed Reading forms are due.

The students have received their spelling lists for the school spelling B.  We will have a practice Spelling B in class on Thursday, Jan.23rd.  The final Spelling B for our class will be on Friday, Jan. 24th. A winner and runner up will be determined, and they will both represent our class in the whole grade level Spelling B. The District Spelling B will be on February 6.

Math - This week in math, the students will make models to solve division problems.  They will divide with remainders and check using multiplication and addition.

Spelling - The students will work with words that have the final j and s sounds. They will do pages 44-46 in their spelling workbook. Their test will be on Friday.

Reading- We will continue our Close reading of Marvin of the Great North Woods.  The students will continue to work on reading text structure with problems and solutions.  They will continue to use the evidence from the text to describe the problems and solutions.  The students will also practice using and recognizing figurative language-similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperbole, personification.

English- In English this week the students will compare two or more things using more and most with adjectives.  They will also use comparative and superlative forms of good and bad.
There will be a test on Friday of this week over adjectives-unit 4.  They will have assignments during the week to help them study for this test.

The students have been researching animals of the Southeast region. When their research is complete, they will begin to write a descriptive paragraphs on their animal.

Social Studies - In social studies this week we will begin a new chapter on the People of the Southeast.  The students will describe how the Cherokee lived before Europeans came to North America.  They will Evaluate how Cherokee culture changed after Europeans came to the Southeast.

Science- The Essential Question for this week will be: How do the behaviors of animals help them meet their needs?  They will understand how instincts and learned behaviors help animals survive and meet their basic needs. A test is planned for Wednesday, January 29 over chapter 3.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 13-17

All students need to bring their recorders to school on Monday.  They should leave them in their backpack because they will use them all year long.

Parent helpers are needed for our in school field trip on Tuesday , January 21 from 8:10-9:40 (Wheels, Levers, & Pulleys).  If you would like to help out please let me know.

Math- We will have our math test on Monday of this week over chapter 5 multiply with 2 digit numbers. They will be tested on multiplying numbers with multiples of 10, estimating products, multiplying by a two-digit number and solving multi-step word problems.   The students have been given worksheets as a review.
We will begin a new unit on division.  The students will divide multiples of 10,100,and 1,000.  They will estimate quotients.

Spelling - In spelling this week the students will be working with words that have a final long e sound.  They will be working on pages 29-31 enrichment activities.  There will be a test on Friday of this week.

English- In English this week the students will identify an adjective that follows the word it describes and a form of the verb be, and identify the noun being described.  They will choose correct articles-a, an, and the to complete sentences and phrases.

The students will research an animal that lives in the Southeast region.  They will use this research and their knowledge of adjectives, and figurative language to write a descriptive paragraph about their animal.

Reading -Most stories involve a problem for the character to solve, and the solution to the problem may come after others have been tried. We will be using the story, Marven of the Great North Woods to practice this skill. After several close readings of this story, students will practice answering text dependent questions. They will focus on developing the meaning of vocabulary words as they reread the story.

Social Studies -  We will have our Southeast Resource Day on Thursday, January 16th.  I am looking for volunteers to send in: peach cups, popcorn, rice cakes, orange slices, Edamame (soybeans) on Wednesday.  Please let me know if you can send in any of these things.

There will be a social studies test over chapter 6 on  Thursday, January 16th. The students should study all the vocabulary and main concepts from the chapter.  They should be sure to use the sheets in their folder as study tools too.
They should know:
The main land forms of the southeast
Piedmont
difference between the inner and outer coastal plains
highest elevation area in the Southeast
climate of Southeast Region
purpose of lighthouses long ago
animals that live in the swamps
 fuel is used to run generators
 products of the Southeast logging industry
What is a hurricane and how can it be destructive?  Several specific details needed to describe both
crops that grow well in the southeast

Science- The students will learn why some animals and plants survive better in a  given environment than others.  They will also understand the parts that make up the cycle of life.
