News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room March 3-March 7

March 4-6 ISAT Testing Please have your child get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast.  You may want to send him/ her out the door with words of encouragement: "Take your time.", "Check over your work.", "Try your hardest.", and of course, "I love you." :)

Spelling - No spelling this week

Math - ISAT testing

Reading - ISAT testing- They will continue to work on their poetry. They should have their writing notebooks at home with the papers in it they explain the kinds of poetry and the poetry requirements with a rater.  They should be completing a poem each day.  So if they do not get to finish during the day, they need to finish in the evening at home.

English - This week we will continue our work with verbs.  The students will write the past tense verbs with helping verbs have, has, had with singular or plural subjects.  They will recognize the different forms of the word Be and they will form contractions using verbs and the word not.  There will be an English test on verbs, unit 3, on Tuesday, March 11th. There will be homework that comes home to help the students review.  They can use their textbook to review as there is a lot of extra practice in their book.

Science - This week we will be review concepts to prep for the ISAT test that is next week.

Social Studies - In social studies this week, the students will make a model of the Badlands.  They will understand why the Midwest is an important agricultural region.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 24 - Feb. 28

  • Institute Day: No school Friday, February 28th ~ Teacher Institute Day

Math - In math this week we will continue our work with looking for patterns and sequences.  We will also review math skills through the week.

Spelling- In spelling this week the students will be working with prefixes and suffixes.  They will be responsible for completing pages 109-111.  The test will be on Thursday.

Reading- This week in reading the students will be reading longer passages and working on their comprehension skills and writing extended responses to the reading.  They will continue to work on their poetry books.  They should be using the GoogleDoc at home and working on their books at home.  Please let me know if there is a problem with this.

English - The students will work with subject verb agreement.  They will choose correct present tense verbs for singular and plural subjects.  They will also form the present and past tense of verbs.

Science- In science this week,  the students will describe the jobs of the nervous, muscular systems, and skeletal systems.  They will describe how the muscular and skeletal systems work together to move the body.

Social Studies - The students will describe the landscape and climate of the Badlands 67 million years ago.  They will define and describe the way it changes the land.  They will explain why the climate of the Badlands changed.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 17- February 21

Monday, February 17 - No School President's Day
Thursday, February 20- Picture Day

Math- In Math this week we will begin a unit on patterns.  The students will describe non numeric growing and repeating patterns, identify, describe, and extend numeric patterns, and extend patterns and write observations about the pattern.

Spelling - The students will work with words that end with ed or ing.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 252-254.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading - This week in reading the students will write an extended response to the story "The Last Dragon".  We will then begin a poetry unit.  The students will be learning to write different kinds of poetry.  A note will be going home to explain the unit requirements.  They will be required to create their own poetry books.  They will be instructed on how to use the Google Doc this week so they can use the computer to access the work they have done at school and continue to work on their book at home.

English-We have just finished typing our final drafts and adding pictures to our descriptive writing paragraphs.  We will begin a unit on verbs this week.

Social Studies- This week the students will review the advantages and disadvantages of shipping by barge and truck or trains.  They will learn about the Badlands of South Dakota. They will describe the climate and land of the Badlands 67 million years ago.

Science - Ask your child if they can tell you how the nutrients from the food they eat gets into their body's cells.  Answer:  Chewing breaks food into pieces.  Saliva softens it. Food passes through the esophagus to the stomach, where it is squeezed and mixed with digestive juices.  The liquid then passes into the small intestine.  Nutrients move from the small intestine  into capillaries.  The blood delivers nutrients to the body's cells.

News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 9-14

February 13-- High Touch High Tech in school field trip
Friday, Feb. 14th - Valentine's Day party 1:30-2:15  The students may bring in Valentine's to pass out for everyone.
February 17--No School- Presidents' Day


Math- We will work with multi-step problem solving this week.  There is a test scheduled for Thursday of this week over chapter 6.  The students should practice the lessons that are in their folder and any workbook pages in their workbook for that chapter.  A review will be sent home as well.


Spelling- This week in spelling the students will work with compound words.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 217-219.  There will be a test on Friday.

Reading - This week we will complete the story of the  The Last Dragon. We will learn how to write an extended response using evidence from the story.  We will also work on the skill of drawing conclusions and sequencing.

English- We will begin a unit on verbs this week.  They will identify and use action verbs in sentences.

Social Studies - We will be traveling to the Midwest this week.  The students will be making their maps of the Midwest Region. There will be a Map test on  Thursday of this week. They will be expected to place the Midwest states and bodies of water as shown on their map models this week in the correct place. 

Science- The students will understand how the digestive system works.  They will understand how the nutrients from the food they eat get to their body's cells.
