News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room - October 15-19

Friday, October 19 - Mario Kart Assembly- Congratulations! Our class came in 3rd place in the magazine drive, so 1 student from the class will be picked to participate in the race against the other 3 classes.

Monday &; Tuesday, October 29-30 Parent Teacher conferences
Wednesday, October 31 - Halloween Party - parade begins at 1:00

Math - This week in math there will be a quiz over lessons 1-3 on Tuesday.  This will cover math properties, expressions and equations.  The students should review their textbook as well as the sheets in their binders.  They will also practice working backwards to solve problems with elapsed time and figure out patterns of numbers and write rules to go with them.  There is a test that is scheduled for Friday of this week over chapter 3.  The students should bring their books home and use the sheets in their binders to help them study for this test.

Spelling - This week our lesson focus is on homophones.  These are words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. They will be assigned workbook pages 67-69 throughout the week.  If they are in the pretest group, they will be assigned activities throughout the week.

ReadingIn reading this week, the students will focus on noting details in a story. They will learn that details may give information, explain ideas, and reveal characters' feelings.  We will be reading both fiction and nonfiction passages as we work on these skills. 

We will finish Because of Winn Dixie this week.  There will be a vocabulary and comprehension test on Friday of this week.  They will be able to use their book for this.


English - This week in English there will be an abbreviation quiz on Tuesday.  We will review on Monday. The students should bring home a review sheet on Monday to help them practice writing abbreviations of days and months and other important abbreviations.  

Social Studies - In social studies this week, the students will work on their map of the Northeast. They will finish their map keys and then use their keys to place the symbols on the map in the correct spots.  The symbols will represent the main mountain ranges that make up the Appalachian Mountains, and they will show the differences in the coastlines of the different states as you travel from the northern states to the southern states in the Northeast Region.  

Science - The students will investigate vertebrates and invertebrates this week.  The will learn about the 5 classes of vertebrates.  They will also learn about the different classes of invertebrates.
