News From Mrs. Cavoto's Class Jan. 19-23rd

Spelling This week unit 17 is a review of units 10-16. The test this week will be different. The students will get a list of words and have to pick the word that is misspelled.

English- This week the students will begin a unit on adjectives. They will review what adjectives are and then learn how to write with adjectives after be and using a, an, and the.
The students will begin a writing activity. They should think of a place that they love to go to when the weather is warmer. ( their favorite "Hot Spot" ) They should brainstorm a list of things that they see going on when they are there and the things they can do while they are there. They should not share this with anyone in their class.

Reading This week in reading will be working on sequencing of events and summarizing. The students will learn to find the main ideas of a passage and use those ideas to summarize a passage or chapter that they have read.

Math - In math this week we will have the test on chapter 6 on Wednesday. They should know how to tell time even using the second hand (see textbook for examples). They also need to read calendars and thermometers and understand elapsed time. Negative numbers were also introduced in this chapter, and the children have to have a good understand of those as shown in the chapter. The children should take their books home and review the skills throughout the chapter. They should also be practicing for a two division timed test planned for Friday of this week.

Science - In science this week the students will learn about electricity and magnetism and how they are related. They will try to use electricity to make a magnet.

Social Studies - Maps are due on Tuesday of this week. They will have a map test on Friday of the midwestern states. The students will learn how the Great Lakes were formed. They will describe how the Great Lakes are connected to the Atlantic Ocean and why the flow of the Chicago River was changed. What are the advantages of shipping by water?
