News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room February 23-27

Math- There will be a test on Wednesday of this week over chapter 7 patterns and sequences in math.  The students should study the papers in their binders and they may bring their books home to use any of the unfinished pages as practice.

Spelling- This week the students will work with compound words.  They will be responsible for workbook pages 217-219 unless they pass out of the pretest and then they will have an alternate list and activities to complete.

English - We will begin a unit on adjectives this week.  The students will identify adjectives that tell what kind or how many and they will identify the nouns they describe.

Reading-  The students will read poetry to understand figurative language such as personification which will help them to gain a better understanding of an author's message.  They  will continue reading the Marvelous Adventures of Edward Tulane.  The students will use poetry to compare the author's feelings in a poem to the characters in the story.  They will continue to work with vocabulary and write responses to their reading in their writing journals.

Science-The students will understand the job of the respiratory system.  They will understand what causes movement of the chest when a person breathes and how the diaphragm works.  What component of air is needed by all of the body's cells?  oxygen.

Social Studies - We will begin a project on the Midwest.  The students will be making a "Just Look Book of a state in the Midwest."
