There will be a Valentine's Day party on Monday, February 14th. The students may bring in valentines to pass out to everyone if they wish. There are 24 students in class.

Spelling This week is a review of spelling words. The workbook pages that need to be done by Friday are pages 79-81. If your child passed out of these words then they need to do three activities with their new words.

Reading The reading strategy that we will be studying next week is summarizing. When reading passages, it is not necessary to recall every word. Instead, we will practice using main ideas and supporting evidence to summarize a passage. While reading, a good reader finds the main ideas, whether they are stated or implied. Then, the reader must find supporting evidence to support the main idea. This support may be in the form of details, examples, explanations or descriptions.

In Mrs. Cavoto's reading class we will be finishing up Because of Winn Dixie. The students will have a test covering vocabulary and comprehension of the stories in the book. More information will be sent home regarding the vocabulary next week. We will have a party to celebrate the completion of our novel. The party will be just like the one that the main character, Opal, had in the story. I will be asking for volunteers to help. More information will come home next week.

Math This week in math the students will read and interpret bar graphs, double graphs, and circle graphs. They will also learn how to read a coordinate grid. There will be a fact test on Friday. The students should be studying their facts.

English We will continue to work with verbs this week. The students will choose correct present tense verbs for singular and plural subjects. They will also form present and past tense verbs.

Science - We will begin an Electricity unit this week. The essential question is What is electricity? The students will demonstrate how to construct a simple electrical circuit.

Social Studies This week in social studies the students will explain why the Midwest is an important agricultural region. They will identify the rainfall in the Midwest and explain how it affects the growth of crops.
