News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 16-21

Things to Remember:

Thanks to Mrs. Lupie and Mrs. Daly for chaperoning our field trip to Argonne. The field trip was a great success and the people at Argonne said that we were the best behaved school they have ever had there.

Congratulations to our classroom spelling B winners -Winner David Peter and Runner-up Sarah Schehovic. Our grade level spelling B will be on the afternoon of January 18th.

Math - In math this week the students will learn how to organize data using the mean, median, and mode. They will also use line plots to organize information.
**Please continue to practice math facts. We will have a fact quiz on Friday of this week.

Spelling- This week we will be working with words that have the final j sounds and s sounds. There will be a test on Friday.Workbook pages 44-46 / three activities for the kids who tested out of the list of words are due on Friday.

Reading The comprehension skill that we will be focusing on this week is drawing conclusions. Good readers use details in a story to draw conclusions about characters and events. Students may use graphic organizers to gather details from a story to draw conclusions. They will learn that it is possible to draw more than one conclusion from the same details.

English - There will be a test on Wednesday covering adjectives this week. That is unit 4 in our textbook. The students will bring homework home that will help them to practice using adjectives correctly. There are review sections at the end of the chapter that they can use for extra practice.

Science - In science this week the students will study how their body thinks and moves. They will describe the jobs of the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. They will also describe how the muscular and skeletal systems work together to move the body. A test is planned for Thursday, January 27 covering chapter 4 The Human Body.

Social Studies- This week the students will review how the Great Lakes were formed. They will explain why the flow of the Chicago River was changed and the advantages of shipping by water.
