News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 10-14th

Things to Remember:
Monday, Jan.10- Reading MAPs testing on Monday (homeroom students)
Tuesday, Jan.11- Field Trip to Argonne Labs on Tuesday, 9:30-1:30. Bring brown bag Sack lunch, Wear long pants - no skirts or shorts please
Wednesday, Jan. 12 - Dan Kirk Juggler Assembly .
Thursday, Jan. 13 - Math MAPs testing on Thursday (homeroom students)
Monday, Jan. 17 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day No School

Please don't forget to send in permission slips for our field trip to Argonne on Tuesday. All students need to be sure to wear pants that day and bring a brown bag lunch.

Spelling B There will be a practice, in class spelling B on Thursday, Jan.12 of this week. There will be another spelling B on Friday, Jan. 14th, where a winner and runner up will be chosen to participate in the whole grade spelling B which will be on Wednesday, January 19. The students should have the spelling lists in their binders.

Spelling- This week the students will work with words that end in y and have the long e sound. Workbook pages 29-31/or activities are due on Friday. Test Friday.

Math - This week in math we will work on new skills to help them collect and organize data. They will learn to use a frequency table and interpret and construct venn diagrams to sort, describe, and classify data. They will also learn to find the mean, median, and mode of a set of data. The students should keep practicing their multiplication facts. I will be testing them periodically. Those who know their multiplication facts are moving on to division facts.

Reading - This week the children will work on identifying the problem and solution of a story as they are reading. Most stories involve a problem for the characters to solve. The solution to the problem may come after others have been tried.
**Mrs. Cavoto's class in reading will continue to read Because of Winn Dixie. There will be an open book quiz over chapter 1-10 on Friday of this week. A list of vocabulary words to be studied will go home on Monday.

English - We will continue our study of adjectives this week. The students will add er to adjectives to compare two things and est to compare more than two things. They will also compare using more, most, good, and bad. There will be a test on Wednesday, January 19th covering chapter 4 adjectives.

Science - The students will understand the job of the respiratory and circulatory systems. You may want to ask them later in the week if they can tell you: What causes movement of the chest when a person moves? (movement of the diaphragm and movement of the ribs) What does the diaphragm do? ( It allows air to enter the body and then leave it.) What component of air is needed by all of the body's cells? (oxygen) Which blood vessels carry blood away from the heart? (arteries) Which kind of blood vessels carry blood back to the heart? veins

Social Studies We will begin our tour of the Midwest Region this week. The students will fill in a map of all the states in the region. They will have an assignment to color and label a map of the Midwest Region. It will be due on Wednesday of next week. There will be a map quiz on Thursday. They will have to put the states and bodies of water shown on their sheet correctly on a map. They will be given extra points for knowing the capitals.
