Spelling-This week the students will begin a new program for spelling that will include vocabulary.  They will work with words that have prefixes and suffixes. There will be a test on Friday of this week over the words and the vocabulary.


ELA- This week we begin the third portion of our Journeys unit titled "Journey to America". The first text that we will read is titled, If Your Name was Changed at Ellis Island. This is a nonfiction piece that details the immigrant experience. Students will work independently and in small groups to close read the text, and to respond to text dependent questions.

The students will share their favorite poems from their poetry books. 

Science- There will be a test over Simple Machines chapter 17 on Friday, May 13.  The students should study the information in their binders and the main concepts and vocabulary in their book.  They should know:

all vocabulary
a scientists definition of work
understand wheel and axles in relation to simple machines
understand what the  6 simple machines are, how they work, and what they are made of
what simple machines change the direction of the force

The students will be given an assignment to construct a catapult.  It will be due on Tuesday, May 17.  Directions will go home with your child this week.

Social Studies- We will continue our study of the Southwest region. We will focus on the resources of the Southwest.
