News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Oct. 24-28

Important Dates to Remember:
Oct. 26- Early Dismissal-11:30
October 31- Halloween party-Students may bring their costumes to school.  We will put them on after lunch 12:50. The party will begin at 1:10-2:10. The parade will begin at 2:10.


Math- There will be a check pt. review on Tuesday. The students have a study guide to help them know what will be quizzed. The students will also work with ratio tables to see relationships between the numbers and solve word problems using estimation and the strategies they have learned to solve for more difficult numbers.

Spelling -  Unit 9 -Words on this week's list will include the prefixes pre- re- and mis-. We will study the definitions of these prefixes and how they change the meaning of the root word that they are attached to. The final TEST is scheduled for Friday, 10/28.

Reading- In reading this week, the students will independently respond to a question relating courage which is shown in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s  "I Have a Dream Speech" and the story of Happy Birthday, Dr. King.  They will also read passages about Jackie Robinson and Malala comparing the two.  We will discuss how  they showed courage?  They should be thinking: Can courage be shown in more than just one way?

English- There will be a test over unit 5 Capitalization and Punctuation on Friday of this week.  The students will be given assignments to help them review the skills.  They should also bring their book home and use the review pages at the end of the unit pages 194-202 to help them study as well.  

Science- The students will use what they have learned about the scientific method to create a scientific experiment at home. They will then share this with the class.  A note will come home explaining the project.  We will be sharing 2 experiments a week.  So I will have the students sign up for the week they would like. 

We will begin a unit on classifying animals.  The students will understand that scientists classify animals into two main groups. (vertebrates and invertebrates).  This week the students will learn about the characteristics of vertebrates.
