Math - There will be a math test on Friday of this week over chapter 4. The students should bring their books home and study the lessons in the chapter as well as the worksheets that they have in their binders. I encourage the students to use the break apart method if they do not have their 6, 7, 8, and 9 facts memorized yet. For example: 8 x 7 break it up into 8 x 5 = 40 and 8 x 2 = 16 then add the two answers. If they are doing division of higher numbers and do not know their facts yet, I encourage them to use subtraction to get to their answer. For example: 63 divided by 9 keep subtracting 9 until you get to 0. Then add up the 9 that you subtracted and that is your answer. Hopefully they will see that if they memorize their facts it is much easier than having to do the other methods, but at least they have a strategy to use if they don't know their facts. Please look in their folders for the results of their 1-5 review of concepts. This will help them know which skills they need to focus on too.

Spelling - The word patterns for this week are short and long vowel sounds. The students should be able to recognize the signs for the long and short vowel sounds. The pages for the week are 99-101. If they pass out of the pretest, then they will work on alternate activities assigned each day.

English - This week in English we will work on abbreviations and using commas correctly. There will be an abbreviations quiz on Friday of this week. The students should know the abbreviations for the following words: Mister, (Mr.) Junior (Jr.), Senior (Sr.), Doctor (Dr.), married woman (Mrs.), any woman (Ms.), Road (Rd.) Street (St.) , Avenue (Ave.) , Boulevard (Blvd.) , Company (Co.), Post Office (P.O.) , Illinois ( IL), all the days of the week and all the months. They should start making note cards now to help them study.

Reading - We will continue to work with making predictions and inferences this week as we read our book Because of Winn Dixie. There will be a vocabulary and comprehension quiz on Wednesday of the week over chapters 1-10. The vocabulary words have been sent home for the students to study. The should know the definitions as they were used in the story, and be able to write the words in a good sentences .They should reread some of the chapters to be sure they understand the main events that have happened so far.
