News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Jan. 5-9th

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful and pleasant break.

Things to Remember:
January 12-16th Iowa Testing

Spelling This week the skill will be words with ou and ow. The letters with ou are usually found in the beginning or middle of a word. The letters ow are usually found at the end of a word or followed b y one n, on l, or the letters er.

Reading We will continue the strategy of finding the main idea and supporting details of a passage.

Reading Club pary on Friday, Jan. 9th. All reading folders are due in on Thursday, Jan. 8th.

English- This week we will work with verbs of "be" and writing contractions. There will be a test on January 14th.

Math - We will continue our work with telling time. This week the students will work with elapsed time. They will use clocks to calculate the time that has elapsed. They will also work with the time that has elapsed on a calendar. They will have a quiz on telling time on Wednesday. They should know how to tell time to the minute before and after the hour. They should also be practicing their nine times tables. There will be a timed test on Friday of their 9 times tables.

Science - We will have our science test for chapter 3 on Tuesday instead of Monday. This will give the kids a day to review since it has been so long since we have gone over the material. Please look at last week's blog for the material to know.

Social Studies This week we will review the causes and effects of the civil war. The students will also learn about the gold rush in the U.S. They will be able to explain why Atlanta is an important transportation center and identify the causes of growth in the Southeastern cities.

A test is planned for Friday of this week over chapter 7.
