News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room January 4-8

*No spelling unit during the week of January 11.
Monday, January 18 - No school Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday

Don't forget to keep track of your reading days in your reading folder. These times can also count for the "Read to Succeed" program to earn a free ticket to Great America.

The next reading party date is scheduled for January 8. All reading folders should be in by January 7th.

Math- This week the students will learn how to survey, collect, and organize data using a tally chart and table. They will practice reading Venn Diagrams and placing numbers correctly in a Venn Diagram. They will be introduced to the mean, median, and mode of a set of numbers. Chapter 7 Lessons 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 will be the focus. Please have the students practice their division 5 & 6's this week. They will have a test on their 5 division on Wednesday and their 6 division on Friday.

Spelling This week the rule/pattern: Many words are spelled with the letter group ough. this letter group can be pronounced in several different ways. A few words are spelled with the letter group ould.

English - This week we will review verbs. The students will learn about main verbs and helping verbs. They will review how to write verbs in the past, present, and future.
They will review their letter writing skills and they will be writing thank you letters this week. Letter writing skills will be tested on Friday of this week.

Reading The students will learn summarizing skills this week. They will understand the elements of a good summary. They will practice writing gists which are very short summaries of a passage.

The students will also focus on the genre of biography. They will read a biography of Gloria Estafon.

Science Our new unit is on adaptations. Living things are adapted for survival in their environment. This week the students will study how the bodies of animals help them meet their needs. They will investigate different beak shapes and how they handle different foods. They will name the basic needs of living things. They will understand how adaptations help living things meet their needs.

Social Studies The students will study the land formation and resources of the Southeast. They will understand the importance of the Mississippi River. They will understand how barrier islands are formed and compare and contrast landform elevations in the Southeast. They will make models of the land forms to help them see the differences.
