News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room Nov. 3-7

Things to Remember:

November 4 - No school Teacher institute
November 5 - Bueno Beef School Fundraiser
November 6 - Picture Retakes, Parent Support Group Meeting 7-9 P.M.
November 10 - poinsettia order forms due
November 14 - roller skaing permission slips due.
November 18 - Roller skating party 4-6:45

November 3 - 14 - Book Worm Angels - Gently used books or new books should be brought in to school. They will then donated to the Chicago Elementary Schools where a majority of the children read below grade level, and they do not have the funds to purchase the books on their own.


The Social Studies committee is looking for two parents who have an education or history background to be involved in the adoption of new Social Studies textbooks. You would have to meet with the committee and provide input choosing our textbook for the coming years. The Social Studies committee will be meeting once every other month for the next two years. Spelling: The skill this week is writing plural nouns correctly. Words that end with a vowel + y ad the letter s. Words that end with a consonant + y change the y to i and add es. The students will be asked to write their words once each night and turn them in .

Reading: This week the students will continue to study character traits as they read Charlotte's Web. They are making character webs for the characters in the story Charlotte's web. They will also learn to use the dictionary to look up meanings of words from the story. They will have a vocab. quiz on the words on Friday, Nov. 7th. They are also learning about the different types of questioning: Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, On Your Own.

English - We will begin a unit on nouns this week. The students will review what a noun is, common and proper nouns, and practice writing sentences that combine the same predicate to create a sentence with a compound subject.

Social Studies We will leave the Northeast and travel down to the Southeast. The students will identify and secribe major landforms in the Southeast. They will also learn about the climate and hurricanes in the Southeast. We will learn about the Southeast resources. If anyone has anything to share that goes witht he Southeast Region, please send it in. We will have a map quiz on the states in the Southeast on Wednesday of the following week, November 12. A test over chapter 6 is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18th.

Science In science we will continue to study the life cycle of plants with seeds and with spores. We are looking for a large fern that shows the spores on the underside of the leaves. If anyone has one, and would like to send in one of the leaves, we would greatly appreciate it.

Math - At this point the students should know by memory their 2's, 5's, and square times tables. They will be given timed tests on them this week. They should also learn their 3's and continue to review the other facts. It is important to practice these facts each night. A test is planned for Tuesday, November 11 over chapter 4.
