News From Mrs. Cavoto's Class April 21-25

Early dismissal will be on Thursday at 11:00.

We will have our Invention Convention on Wed. from 1:15 to 1:45 of this week. The students will share their inventions and explain how they work at this time. It will be set up so that people can walk from desk to desk to learn about the different inventions from our student inventors.

Our field trip to the Lizzadro Museum will be on Tuesday, April 29th. We will leave school at 11:15. The students need to bring a sack lunch that day, and we will eat in the classroom before we leave.

I am looking for parent volunteers to come to the Museum of Science and Industry on May 29th. Please e-mail me if you would like to join us.

English This week we will begin our Persuasive essay writing. The children have learned about persuasion through their persuasive ads, and they have voted on their favorite candy bar with Mrs. Sulima's class, because they were persuaded by their essays. Now, our class will have the chance to persuade others to vote for their favorite candy bar. We will look at all aspects of the candy bar: nutritional value, ingredients, convenience, appearance, packaging, overall taste etc.
We will be going through the steps of the writing process as we gather our information for our essays.

Science "We will...We will... rock you!" This week in science we will begin our rock and minerals unit. The students will first develop their observation skills. Then they will learn about minerals. What is a mineral?

Social Studies The students will continue their scavenger hunt on Illinois. They are using different sites on the internet to locate information about Illinois. They are learning about the history, government, and special places in Illinois. They will begin research on a famous Illinoian this week.

Math We will review equivalent fractions this week. The students will use fraction pieces to compare and order fractions. They will identify and write mixed fractions. The students should be passed out of their 9 division. You may want to ask them if they have passed all of their division facts up to nine. I will be giving a review of mixed division facts through 9's on Friday. They will get 40 problems to complete in 3 minutes.
