News From Mrs. Cavoto's Room January 22-25

Music - We will have music on Wednesday of this week. A music test will be on Friday of this week.

We will have our "Life on the Plains" program on Wednesday of this week.

Spelling This is a review unit this week. The test on Friday will be in a different format. The students will have to look at a group of words to determine which one is misspelled.

Reading This week we will continue our reading and writing using the text pattern - compare and contrast.

The students finished their second "Book Club" discussion on Friday. Look for their"Book Club" discussion sheets to come home with them on Tuesday of this week. If they are reading Caught in the Act or Behind Rebel Lines, they should read chapter 10-13 and fill in their discussions sheets to be ready to discuss on Friday, January 25th. They will be given some time for reading in class.(If they are having difficulty with the types of questions, they should refer to their reading folders where they should have samples and explanations of the different questions)

English The students will be reading expository texts and writing responses to questions about the text.

Science Last week the students worked to create a filament as inside a lightbulb. It was exciting to see the filament glow! It was also very exciting to have Mr. Lee here, and I hope the children shared some of the experiments that he did with you.

This week the students will learn about conductors and insulators. They will identify solid materials that are/are not conductors of electricty. They will determine whether four liquids are conductors of electricity.

Social Studies This week we will have a test on Thursday over chapter 7 on the Southeast.

The students should be sure to know the vocabulary and people of the Southeast along with studying the worksheets in their folder, and main ideas from the text. Be sure to check past blogs for main ideas to know.

This week to focus on :

Where is the town of Dahlonega, and why did it grow so quickly in1828? (Dahlonega is in northeren Georgia. After gold was discovered there, many people rushed to Dahlonega to look for gold.)

What is so special about the Georgia State Capitol? ( The dome of the State Capitol in Georgia is made of gold from Dahlonega. It was modeled after the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. There is a Georgia Hall of Fame in it with picures of governors and other famous Georgians. It also has the State Museum of Science and Industry. )

What effect did the railroad have on Atlanta, Georgia? ( It helped the city grow and prosper.)

Why are cities in the Southeast growing? ( Many people move for the warmer climate and beautiful beaches of the Southeast. Also, People are moving there for jobs because of new industry and the growing economy.)

Math - This week the students will problem solve using perimeter and area. They will also learn about space figures and explore volume of a space figure.

I will be giving the 12x's test on Tuesday of this week. The studetns will also take a timed test on their mixed facts on Friday. It is very important for them to keep reviewing their facts.

A test is planned for Friday of this week.
