News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room January 14th - 18th

Reading Club Party - Our third Reading Club Party will be this Friday. All students should turn in their reading folders whether they have completed 4 weeks of reading or not. Remember this is part of their reading grade.

Spelling Bee - Check for the Spelling Bee information in your child's binder. They should keep this sheet in a safe spot and study the words as they can. We will have the class spelling Bee at the end of January.

Those students who are very motivated to study more words should go to the website provided on the sheet, as those words will not be passed out.

Lunch Tickets: The children may not borrow money from the office if they have outstanding debts.

Reading: The children had their first Book Club discussion last week. They did a great job of discussing their different types of questions, vocabulary, predictions and connections. We will complete one more Book Club discussion sheet in class this week. After that, they will be given the reading assignment and book club discussion sheet to do at home. You can look for this to come home toward the end of next week.

We will continue to work on text patterns this week. Compare/Contrast will be the focus skill this week. The students will be reading passages that compare and contrast as well as writing compare/and contrast paragraphs.

English We will have a test over verbs on Wednesday of this week. The students should review the skills from Unit 3 on verbs. There are many practice pages at the end of the chapter that will help them review for this test.

Science We will review the ways in which a circuit will be completed to light a bulb. The students will investigate the insides of a lightbulb. They will make a model of a filament and infer the function of the filament in a light bulb. A quiz will be given on Thursday to see if the students understand circuits and can draw different circuits using battery(s), light bulb(s) and switch(s)

Mr. Lee, a famous scientist, will be in our class on Wednesday morning to conduct a special class on electricity.

Social Studies
Study the map of the Southeast states. A test will be given on Friday of this week. Be able to place each state correctly on a map along with lableling the bodies of water (Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean). Spelling is important but not graded. If I can not read a state because of neatnes or spelling, however, it will be marked wrong. Extra points will be given for knowing the capital of each state.

Other important ideas to know:

Two reasons for the Civil War ( Northerners and Southerners disagreed about whether states or the national government should have the most say about what citizens could do. Also, Many Southerners wanted slavery in the new states added to the nation, but many Northerners did not want slavery to expand.)

What were three effects of the Civil War on the land and people of the Southeast? ( Farms and factories were destroyed. Slavery ended. One in three of the South's soldiers died.)

How did the Southeast change during Reconstruction? (Farms were replanted and facories and railroads were rebuilt. All states that had seceded were readmitted to theUnion. African Americans were promised their civil rights but many continued to live in poverty.

How did Dr. King and his followers protest segregation? ( They used nonviolent protests. For example, marches, sit-ins and boycotts)

A test will be given over Chapter 7 on Thursday, January 23rd. Don't wait until the last minute to study. There is so much information in this chapter to know.

Math This week in math the students will measure perimeter and find the area of different sufaces along with problem solving using area and perimeter.

A test over Geometry, Chapter 11, will be on Friday, January 24th. This is a difficult test so the students should bring their text books home this week to review the concepts from the beginning of the chapter.

They will be expected to test out of their 10's, 11's and 12's this week. Many have passed out of 10's and 11's. Remember that they really need to practice just 11x10, 11x11, 11x12. The twelves will be more difficult, but should just be a review of what they have been tested on except 12x12.

The week of January 21st, they will have to pass a mix of all the times tables from 2-9. They should be reviewing these facts.
