News from Mrs. Cavoto's Room Feb. 11-Feb. 15

Our Resource Day in social studies will be on Wednesday of this week.  If you would like to help by sending in one of the following, please let me know.   Cheese,a product of Wisconsin, popcorn a product of the Central Plains because there is enough rain for corn to grow well there, wheat crackers, edemame (soybeans),apple juice, and strawberries)

Math -  We will begin a unit on geometry this week.  The students will identify and draw points, angles and rays. They will also use a protractor to measure and classify angles.  Remember the students can refer to their packets in their folders if you have questions on vocabulary or terms that may be included in the homework.

Spelling  This week the students will be working with compound words.  They will do pages 217-219 in their workbook volume 1, or they will work on assigned activities.

Reading - The students will be writing poetry this week.  They will use colorful language and imagery as they are writing to help create pictures in the minds of their readers.  They will also work on writing extended responses to reading passages.  The skill this week - understanding prefixes and suffixes.

English - We  will continue working with verbs this week.  The students will identify and use the past,
present and future tense of verbs. They will also proofread for subject verb agreement.

Social Studies -There will be a test over chapter 8 Water and Land of the Midwest on Thursday of this week.  We will have Resource Day on Wednesday also.
The students should know:
All vocabulary
All main concepts as shown at the end of readings in the text
What caused the Great Lakes?
How are the Great Lakes connected to the Atlantic Ocean?
What caused the engineers to change the flow of the Chicago River?
Advantages and disadvantages of shipping by barge
Compare the Badlands of long ago to the Badlands of today.  Be sure to include, weather, land, animals
What caused the climate change in the Badlands?
Why is the Midwest an important agricultural region?
Know the crops grown in the Midwest
Understand the importance of irrigation to the Midwest farmers
Know the products of Wisconsin
Why are so many fossils found in the South Dakota Badlands? Why were the fossils not found long ago?

Science - The student will understand why the force of gravity is important.  They will observe the forces involved in circular motion.They will identify several natural forces including gravity and friction.
